Ever have an idea that starts out great, but then it keeps going and suddenly everything's stupid again? Yeah, that be this. Hey, first main comic longer than four panels, at least.
I can't shake the feeling Marie is quite the Octo Racist during Octo Valley. Calling them Octoslobs, demanding you kill every single one and all that. She has every right to be, perhaps. She saw how evil Octavio is, had to repel them once before, never learned the backstory of the first Turf War. And now those octoslobs come back and, as she disocvers later down the line, kidnapped and enslaved her cousin and best friend just to spite her. I can only imagine she leaves the story with one hell of a bias towards the Octarian forces...and THEN Octolings migrate to the surface. As War Agent 3 said in one of the previous asks, one can only wonder if Marie wanted Four to emulate the human massacres of old if she designed the Mk2 Hero Shot after a human weapon (the P90). And it goes without saying that War Marie has this bias and fucking then some.
So what happens to change this? I think two events; the success of Hero Mode and Octo Expansion. Only after finally saving Callie from the Octo scourge does Marie start to calm down about the situation, wanting nothing more than to just be by her side again. And then she sees what happens in the Metro when Agent 3 reports back to her, and there's no way she DIDN'T see the fight at the statue. Like, come on. But then, she sees something she never thought she would; an Octoling, one of the older enemies that 3 slaughtered by the hundreds back in the Canyon, doing some good. Fighting for the safety of all. A...good guy. It shatters her bias and gets her thinking...yes, maybe not all Octos are bad...
War Marie, on the other hand, locks in her hate after Callie dies. She lost pretty much everything from Callie's death at her hands, all set up by the Octo forces. They took all she suffered for two years to find. And Agent 4, as far as she's concerned, failed. She failed to save Callie. She failed to defeat Octavio. She FAILED to destroy those takoyaki brains and stop their plans. Sure, Agent 8 is released and Octo Expansion DOES happen in her timeline, but it's too late. Octos are scum, the devil. They, and Four, they're all to blame. She just kept making excuses until the bitter end, so much she refused to adknowledge the truth.
...Well, there's a little more than that, but saying more would spoil the story to Crimson Gaze, which IS happening. It's just that We Become Monsters is taking precedent due to its Halloween nature. Anyway, I imagine main!Marie still harbours that resentment, deep down. She can't control it, it's just...there. That sort of bias don't go away because of one small good thing that is contrary, I know that. So it goes without saying that she's still gonna freak when she first sees Eight. But then, she discovers she's the one to save the world and was one of the many moved by the Sister's Song. So she'll warm to her in time. Cuttlefish sure did.

Truth be told, I LOVE that pistol. Fictional but not just a standard gun buried in future clutter, looks great and animates really well. Plus its easier to scale to Inkling size and doesn't become invisible after resizing. So that's cool.

Come to think of it, Callie is a good influence on Marie. That's not speculation either, that's legit canon according to Nintendo's official Twitter. During the Final Fest, Marie's description mentions how Callie is "a good influence." Which is interesting seeing how Marie is supposedly the more sensible of the two.
Makes me wonder if Marie would consistently stoop to some kind of bad behavior without her cousin.

It's hard to tell. We don't...really know a lot about the Sisters. What they're like beyond the limelight. Even Octo Valley is so very...barren. We just have to keep filling in the blanks as Nintendo's not too interested in it with this game. The multiplayer is first and foremost...and that's about it.

I'm torn, because on the one hand I LOVE subtle hints into a character's life and relationships. I like gleaning the histories/personalities of characters based on limited information. I love storytelling that isn't in your face, where we learn about/get to know characters through action and dialogue over exposition.
But on the other hand, there still needs to be a set history and characterization in place. And while we can glean a little about the Sisters, there isn't much to glean. Compare this to Off the Hook, who got a LOT of development in Splatoon 2. The Squid Sisters had the misfortune of being the idol characters in the first game...the "setting foot in the door" game, the "let's try this out" game. It wasn't a confident leap into the world like Splatoon 2 was, thus they weren't as deeply written (at least that's what I think). We're kinda left to fill in the gaps a little too much.
My sincerest hope is they fix this for a potential Splatoon 3. I won't get my hopes up though...so I'm gonna make some noise ;D. I'm not gonna be obnoxious about it, but I am going to let Nintendo know that these characters are still loved and that they deserve better. I truly believe they have the potential to be interesting and complex characters beyond what we've had so far (especially Callie. Of all the characters, she's had the least development. Heck, Cap'n Cuttlefish and the side characters in Octo Expansion had better exposure/development compared to her, so I really think this should be fixed in a threequel).

In a way yes. I think the issue is that all the deep lore isn't in game; most of it is through interviews with Nogami, tweets, books, concept art, etc. So those who stick with the games kinda have to fill in the blanks themselves.

Exactly. Hopefully if/when Splatoon 3 comes out, Nintendo/Nogami will have a better handle on things. Won't get my hopes up, but I can still try, and we can always talk about it on social media. Nogami does look at feedback from Reddit and such (he's said so himself).

Yep. In fact, that's how War Marina's Pearl dies. Well more specifically it's how the Pearl in the story that inspired War Marina dies. Pushed down a flight of steps, and it just completely bashes her head in. TBH, Inkling biology kind of annoys/upsets me because A: it's not consistent and probably never will be and B: what we do know or headcanon leads to more questions and horrifying revelations than answers.

Being an inkling sounds fun at first, but there’s some risks... such as the fact that being a Nintendo character means you could be put in Smash and forced to fight bosses with very vague characterization (uhg, Galeem’s off-waves... hope it was at least possible to dodge that attack when Tabuu did it)

Yep. But it's also because his family have leviathan blood in their veins and he just happens to be the one from this generation of the family to inherit the ability to turn into the leviathan. It doubles the strength, speed and stamina but it do have a cost. Everytime the user uses this ability, their lifespan is shortened with one year
