I didn't even know about the natural spiral trick, but it looks like that didn't stop me from using it anyway... I've gone back and looked at some of my favorite pieces and now I keep finding it in them. I was wondering why those ones were better than some of the others I pput just as much work into!

While i do not agree with certain points in this tutorial, it is still extremely diverse and helpful.

Certain parts firmly disapproves an opposite style. Certain styles that do not fit into mainstream but are still attractive without the typical generics. I hope you understand.

ehhhhh~
*raises hand*
This is a beautiful and mostly accurate tutorial,

but,

I feel the need to explain to learners that while the "years of practice vs. few days of practice" is very true, do not expect to draw like that in a few days, unless you are trying to directly copy a style. Do not expect to find and perfect your unique and individual style within mere days, as I feel you may be mislead to believe. Yes, you do improve by drawing each day and yes, practice does help in discovering your style, but not in a day or two.

Sorry if that seemed… storage, random, outlandish… etc, but i felt it needed to be explained
There is a difference between copying someone's style, which you can learn "in a few days",
and developing your own, which may take as long a time as it took the masters to learn : )

MasterTeacher In reply to 3moBunni [2012-08-28 09:11:34 +0000 UTC]

Yes, you are right. But at thirst you must try directly copy of style. And if you reach perfect skill in "copying" - only after this you can experiment with your own style At thirst learn draw like Rembrand, at second - as you wish and what you want

3moBunni In reply to MasterTeacher [2012-08-30 18:13:06 +0000 UTC]

mm…. I can see being influenced by styles to then create your own, but I think I'm going to have to disagree. While, yes, before creating your own style you must be influenced, exposed, to other's styles, I don't believe you have to "perfect" copying..
My friend, for example, was one of the people who did begin her artistic "career" by copying popular manga-kas, making fan art. She was very skilled in the ways of copying pictures, but when she tried to make original art she never knew where to begin and it hindered her greatly because she could only draw what she saw physically and not what she saw in her mind.

I, however, being exposed to her art and her influences began to draw in a generalization of the manga style, that being that I drew characters with pointy chins, large eyes, big hair, and small mouths and noses. My style was a generalization of the other styles I was exposed to but it was not a copy, it was original. This allowed me to draw from my head because I figured out the drawing process on my own by being exposed to influences and identifying their similarities.
In time, I was additionally taught to draw from life, and became able to draw fan art in the styles of others as well as in my own style.

So to me, at least, style, unlike copying, is something that can't be taught, it must be discovered. You cannot develop your own style by copying those of others, you must observe these styles and create your own based off your preferences and practice.

I know english not very good and, i think, cant explain what I mean
At 10 yo I liked to draw Micky mouse in school nootebook. I just remember how he draws. It was perfect pictures, but Micky always looked same - front view. That's what I call a BAD COPIYNG!
But if I could paint MickyMouse in any position and from any angle in the perspective - it will be GOOD COPYING!
Many artists can not draw the person out of their head in a difficult position, do not know the basics of body proportions, do not know the basic laws of color, but tend to develop their own style. If someone do not know how to build and draw a simple anime head, why he take on a realistic portrait?
This is what I mean

3moBunni In reply to MasterTeacher [2012-08-31 13:54:05 +0000 UTC]

Oooohhh… I see what you mean now, thank you for explaining it ^^
(and i think your english is very very good! )

So you're not saying that someone must copy to develop their own style, you're saying that people must learn and perfect the basics before moving towards something more challenging! I agree!
