Description
These fellows are the eponymous heroes of the comic created by Larry Williams, his brother Tim and myself. Just so you know, Apeman is the big gorilla and Monkeyboy is the grinning idiot chimpanzee, and when they're not saving the world in spandex they're respectively known as Clarence and Bobo, a pair of seemingly normal simians who reside in San Diablo Zoo. The precise circumstances surrounding their rise to superherodom are complex and weird, so hopefully it’ll suffice to say that they acquired super strength from a bizarre laboratory experiment and got really good at building gadgets from reading lots of books when no humans were looking. (In case you’re wondering, the green things attached to their belts are vine whips, which they use to swing from place to place when the mood takes them.)This piccy was coloured with Karisma pencils, my favourite colouring tools in the world ever, which naturally they’ve now stopped making because they found out I liked them. A thousand curses.

I wish gorillas got more positive portrayal in media, it seems they're mostly portrayed as villains besides Donkey Kong

Apeman would be perfect if he had super powers to increase the size, for example: Let's imagine Apeman, with nearly 300 feet tall? He would save the city, in the palms of his mighty hand! A giant gorilla, would sound like a superhero! Apeman And has this profile.

Golly! Many thanks indeed for such glowing acclaim. I'm delighted you like the characters so much, and you may be pleased to know that Apeman and Monkeyboy's first solo comic is in the process of being coloured and lettered right now. When it finally comes to be published, you can be sure I'll let you know! In the meantime, there'll be plenty more ape-related arty stuff appearing here; and assorted online comic purveyors may still be able to help you get your hands on Bubba the Redneck Werewolf's Super Sci-Fi Special, where AM and MB made their comicky debut. There's a few sellers on eBay with some copies left, I believe. Take care, and all the best!

The color on these is amazing! It's so nice to see art that's awesomely hand colored and not digitally painted once in a while! I must admit, I've never heard of Apeman and Monkeyboy... I'll have to check it out sometime - looks like a really cool comic!

That is brilliant! It sorta reminds me of 'Captain Simian and the Space Monkeys'. I truly thought that this was coloured in digitally when I first looked at it.

I take that as a great compliment! And I remember that show well; I was very fond of it in my youth. Shame it didn't survive beyond one series, really.

Yeah it was a very... interesting show in it's time Too bad YouTube doesn't have all the episodes. It only has a handful of them
It doesn't even have the pilot!

Looks like I'm not the only one thinking these two reminded me of Gor & Spydor! And I so love that show and want more from it for it! It's a show that writes itself!
Aside from Now they've got all the episodes on Youtube, might I recommend Watchcartoononline.io to guarantee all 26 episodes of Captain Simian & the Space Monkeys?

It should be safe enough. Though for certain computers, there May come a "Will you allow notifications?" popup come on the side. Just go Not now on it. I do!
I've also got ideas for Captain Simian & the Space Monkeys if you'd like to hear some of them!

I have not used Karisma pencils in years....and I loved them too!! I had no idea that they don't make them any more....it just figures don't it

'Tis a greatly annoying thing. However! I've been experimenting with some new Derwent (I think) pencils which seem like a jolly good substitute. I can't remember what they're called just at the moment (it might be "Artistry", but I could very well be making that up), but I shall doubtless natter about them at a later date once I've played about with them a bit more.
Many thanks for the kind words, by the way! I'm delighted you like the super-powered simians.

Not raining on your parade or anything but MonkeyBoy doesn't have a tail, meaning he can't be a monkey and he sort of looks like a chimp... DON'T HURT ME! <=[

MatthewSmith In reply to ArtzyBoy13 [2008-07-24 11:39:33 +0000 UTC]
Actually, you're completely right - Bobo is indeed a chimp, which means he is very definitely an ape and not a monkey. However, when he was thinking up superhero names for himself and Clarence, he thought Monkeyboy sounded cool and so he stuck with it. (Clarence himself actually points out the zoological innacuracy of this to his young companion, but ultimately he lets it slide because he can't think of anything better.) So, no hurting necessary! Yet.

Ta for the kindly comments! And I'm pleased to report that Derwent watercolour pencils are a pretty good alternative to Karismas, although the white pencil refuses to blend properly with the darker colours, so I shall have to continue experimenting with other varieties...

Very good drawing indeed. I especially like Apeman!
I wanted to know a thing, tough: how do you color in such a soft way? Is it your technique or is it Karisma pencils' "fault"? Or maybe a mixture of both?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
MatthewSmith In reply to Garlar [2007-02-21 13:22:34 +0000 UTC]
It's all to do with the fabled White Pencil of Splendidness. Karisma pencils were great because they were always of precisely the same hardness, making it simple to blend colours together - and the best pencil of all was the white one, beause it could be applied to any other colour really easily to add highlights and soften the inevitable graininess that results from colouring anything with pencils. I used it lots.
Many thanks for the kindly comments, by the way! You can expect to see much more of Apeman and his diminutive sidekick in the future.
