Description No, it’s nothing to do with Stephen King.

You probably know that most big companies these days have an IT department. Ostensibly, the purpose of the IT department is to keep everyone’s computers running properly. In reality, the IT department does nothing. At all. Except, of course, on those rare occasions when someone manages to get through on the telephone, perhaps by letting it ring for anything up to seven hours. On those occasions, the lucky caller will get to hear the standard IT department response to every computer-related problem in the world. And it will be delivered by a creature exactly like the one pictured above.

These are the things that live in IT departments. They are not your friends.

Something else you might know is that top illustrator chap G H Mongo (whose place upon DA can be found here: [link] ) has been running a special Art Jam thing, and the theme for the first round of entries was “Slow”. This picture was my entry because, when it comes to doing anything even remotely useful, there’s nothing slower than an IT creature.

Hurr! Great! Hmm... You can tell that the IT craetures have that typical whiny voice that we hear so many times over the phone!

I know exactly the kind of voice you mean. Sort of like a bored Greg Proops on helium.

I just got flashes of Q.I. then.. Heh! Although I think Gregs voice alone would be enough to send anyone to sleep

'Tis a good read, and I remember being quite pleased to discover that I wasn't the only person who found clowns incredibly creepy.

I believe a fear of clowns is a common complaint.

No, you're right. Some of them go away if you ignore them for long enough.

The only thing thats missing is the old dear thats usually on the other end, who is having an effy fit because her screen has been invaded by flying toasters and thinks she has a virus.

Or because she's using a Mac and the little timebomb error message has just popped up, causing her to think that her computer is about to explode.

And, er, yes. I should point out that this particular picture is in no way intended to impugn your profession. Well, obviously it is, but not on a personal level. Um.

Hey, look! It's the Goodyear Blimp!

Imagination is another good thing for confounding IT creatures. They don't know what it is.

Considering the fact that 3, yes 3 people I know have had problems with their computers in the last few days, I could not help but laugh my ass off at this one.

When my rubbish PC at work went rubbish again last week, despite assurances from the IT blokes that they'd definitely fixed the problem, I sent them this picture by e-mail with the words: "That's you, that is." As you can imagine, they were heartily amused.

You were very close to the truth. The only notable difference is that IT creatures don't go away if you pour salt on them.

Actually, laughter's an excellent way of confounding these ghastly little things. It's not a sound they're used to hearing, you see, and in the confusion they might let slip a genuinely useful piece of information about getting your computer to work. You can also have fun annoying them by saying that Macs are better than PCs.
