Description I have a way of discovering things way after they've happened. So, please forgive me for making this picture so long after this comic came out

I know a lot of fans haven't been too impressed with the Extended story that has been introduced with the AtLA comics by Darkhorse. But, I've really enjoyed them, especially "The Search"

I mean, what Avatar fan doesn't want to know what happened to Zuko's mom?

I hoped to capture the the emotion in the first and final moments of the story, while showing how everything in between built up to it. If you hadn't noticed... go compare the first lines of the first comic with the last lines spoken in the final one. You'll notice something cool ;D

I'm trying to explain this without giving away the whole story as well for those of you who haven't had the chance to read it .

And, if you haven't read it... come on!

...

Avatar belongs to Mike, Bryan and Nick. Art belongs to me.

I loved it!

And it made me so sad for Ursa even more. She was forced to marry a monster and not only did she suffer, Zuko and Azula suffered as well when they had him for a father.

And even though Ursa's letter was very ...unhinged, I don't blame her one bit for wishing Ozai wasn't Zuko's father because he is atrocious and never deserved a family in the first place.

I think Ozai lied about the prophecy because he told Ursa he had spies checking on her before they were married and when Azulon commanded that Ozai kill Zuko it made me suspicious as to why Azulon would go against a prophecy made by his sages. Ozai probably made up that lie because Iroh was going to be Firelord and Lu Ten as well and when he found out Avatar Roku had a granddaughter he thought of how she would give him powerful heirs. And after they were born he had to get rid of Lu Ten so he would have either Zuko or Azula become Firelord after him.

And when he treated Zuko like garbage after reading that letter it wasn't only to hurt Ursa but because of how she would rather be with a peasant than a prince and he probably wanted Zuko to work harder for his respect by treating him like that so he would become what Ursa feared: like his father.

And when he banished Ursa, he knew she fulfilled her purpose.

Hmm, interesting thoughts. I'll have to read it again, but that sounds plausible.

I agree that Ozai did know that Zuko was really his son, and he just tormented him to make him tougher. But, I think a big part of it was him showing Ursa what he could do, and when she was gone he did it to take out his anger for her.

Ozai is a horrible person.

It's true that it's hard to see the horrible things that Zuko and Ursa had to go through, but that makes it that much sweeter when they finally are reunited and can finally move on from all of that pain.

Mahogany25 In reply to Mattierial [2014-09-19 13:55:24 +0000 UTC]

I think that could be the case because we never heard of this prophecy until the comic, and when Azulon commanded him to kill Zuko it made no sense because he is going against a prophecy the sages told him. I think after Zuko and Azula were born he made a plan to kill Lu Ten and Azulon probably figured out it was Ozai and must have found out the prophecy was a lie and was liivid because not only did Ozai trick him so he can kill Lu Ten, but because he brought a peasant girl into the family who is the granddaughter of Sozin's arch nemisis. So not only did he want him to kill Zuko to feel Ozai's pain I think he did it to foil Ozai's plans to become firelord since only the first born son can be and then Azulon would disown Ursa and Azula from the royal family and have them banished to fix the damage Ozai caused. So either way Ursa was going to be exiled.

Agreed, while he wanted to show Ursa what he could do, he wanted to show her that he will make Zuko become the monster she'd fear he would be. From the day Zuko was born Ozai threatened to throw him out if he wasn't a firebender and when he did show he was one Ozai made it his mission to make Zuko his heir. But because of Ursa's motherly love Ozai knew she was getting in the way and after that letter he told her that it will be her fault that Ozai treated Zuko like that because now he will work harder to harden Zuko's heart. Not only that but Ursa bruised his pride when she said she'd rather be with a peasant man and have him as Zuko's father than a prince.

He is, he lied to Ursa and ruined her life as well as Zuko and Azula because he used Ursa asa Β brew mare and Zuko and Azula as his own personal soldiers and never saw them as his children. But after Aang defeated him Ozai lost everything and is locked up forever.

Yep, Zuko is happy that his mother is well and has a good husband and a sweet child and Ursa is glad that Zuko is still kind hearted and is now the firelord and can repair the damage Azulon and Ozai caused.

I bet Ursa forgot all about Azula b/c she replaced her w/ a "sane" daughter. Whoop-dee-doo...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Mahogany25 In reply to worldends4me [2014-09-22 12:08:14 +0000 UTC]

LOL Well I wouldn't say replaced her daughter, true she and Azula had a rocky relationship but it was Ozai's fault because he made Azula into the monster she is because she was a podigy. It hurt Ursa to see Azula be like and can't have that kind of relationship with her like she has with Zuko. When she forgot about her old life and had Kiyi it shows that she still has a mothers love.

And she did say she was sorry for not loving her enough when she didn't remember, and I think she said that to them both it's because when she chose Ozai as her husband she chose him as the father of her children and they suffered because she said yes even though she had no other choice and felt guilty that her children had to be part of the dysfunction that is the royal family.

Ursa: Everything?
Zuko: Everything.
Ursa: For you my dear, I'll start from the beginning <3

I love the concept of how we got to know Ursa's backstory as she actually was explaining it to Zuko. When I saw it all over the place . Good artwork! Keep it up

It's so great to see atla art from you again! I love the comics and Korra, too, but a lot of people don't like it cuz it's not the original series. The comics, though, are great and bridging the gap between atla and lok soo well it's the bomb! I love the picture and I WILL FIND THE STRAWBERRY. SOON.

Yeah, I agree. I think the comics do a great job of connecting the two series, especially in "The Promise," with Republic city, the air acolytes and Toph's metal bending . All of that was really cool

This is positively stunning! I did enjoy the post-series comic books of Avatar: The Last Airbender, and I like the Majora's Mask reference on the right. The Search is my favorite part of the season four of this series, and I hope The Rift will be just as good, now that Toph's back! What do people have against the comic books? I don't claim that they are for everyone, but please, if you love the series, the comics are the next best thing. I've wondered myself what happened to Ursa, and now I know! But for those who don't know, you'll see! I mean, the comic books are created with the original creators, so what's the big deal? At least they're giving the green light to more Avatar, and they're giving one of my new favorite local authors a chance to shine and write his own thing in their sandbox. The results are stunning, plus Dark Horse is my favorite comic book company. It was also my first comic book company that got me interested in comics in the first place. I didn't like comic books until I was like twelve. Now I just read Avatar: The Last Airbender, but now that I know what happened to Ursa, I'm going to wait for the hardcover library edition of The Rift and all following Avatar comic miniseries.

But, I've always loved what Mike and Bryan give us!

You're welcome. Sure did! Which part? If you ask me, the first three seasons were just the beginning. Besides, there's plenty more stories to tell in the world of the four elements. Some are just beginning. Mike and Bryan are my two favorite cartoonists now, along with Genndy Tartakovsky.
