Hmm, I remember the animated series that was before the current one. It had Hotrod, who was one of my favorites and the animation looked sharp and angular, rather than the Tonka style of the recent one. I also remember when the Beast Wars series was on and I wanted one the green truck, I forget what it turned into.

Actually, I can't remember the guy's name all that well. I wanna say it was Hotrod, but it could have been Hotshot, Heat-something; mainly I remember he was an autobot and he had yellow armor. At first, when transformers was rebooted again, I has mistaken Bumblebee for the guy I'm thinking of. If anyone knows, I'd appreciate it!

Hm, If I were to give my persona opinion:...
1. Generation 1 and Prime Optimus: What Can I say, you don't mess with Peter Cullen, which is why they brought him back to voice the Big Red and Blue in the latest series. Shame about the movies...
2. Beast Wars Optimus. I felt Beast Wars had THE best storyline of any of the transformers series, mainly due to it's smaller cast. It's Sequel was weak though, despite the premise being sound. Also, how the hell is Primal descended from the original Optimus?
3. Animated Optimus: Since they change a lot for this (Magnus replacing Prime as leader rank) this one was a tough spot to place. Still, I certainly liked this version of Prime, as he seemed to grow alongside his men.
4. Unicron Trilogy Optimus: I liked Armada despite the glaring issues with animation, Energon not so much, and never saw Cybertron. So he's low on the list because of that.
5. Movie Prime: Sorry pete, but no matter how many con faces you rip off, it doesn't make up for Shia Lebouf being the REAL Main Character of the damn movies. Seriously, we don't care about the squishy humans! GIVE US MORE MECH FIGHTS.
As for Rodimus...meh, he's okay I guess, certainly prefer the G1 version to the one we got in Energon and his brief Cameo in Animated. So If i were to rate him it'd be.
1. G1 Rodimus: Held the fort down rather well till Optimus came back.
2. Energo Rodimus: (Due to actually DOING something, not for the culture of the show)
3. Animated Rodimus: Was in one episode to my knowledge and didn't even make it past the opening before the rust set in.

Why not update this strip to include the Transformers Prime incarnation of Optimus Prime, along with the WFC/FOC incarnation, and the Robots in Disguise incarnation as well?

The transformations of the robots in the live action movies are depicted as happening in a completely inorganic manner, hence the acronym: NBE, which stands for Non-Biological Extraterrestrials, which also explains why there is a complete lack of mass shifting in the transformations, because mass shifting is completely unrealistic. So, my vote goes to Movie Prime.

The Beast Wars cartoon did have a mechanism built into the series that added new characters to the series while having the addition of new characters to the series be integral to the plotline by showing in the very first episode the Axalon ejecting stasis pods into Prehistoric Earth's atmosphere to seed the show with new cast members.

G1 Prime: Hero/idol/inspiration to a generation
Rodimus: Better in the comics (Simon Furman made him much more rounded than in the cartoon)
Beast Wars: Less said the better
Armada: WTF happened?
Animated: When the $%^& did Prime become a rank?
Movie: Peter Cullen is the only reason This counts as a Prime.

Junk-tastic transformation? I quite liked it. Optimus Prime's new look indicates that he Cybertronians evolved, rather than being created.
G1's origin story was that they were made by the Quintesons to be laborers, and had to be mass-produced, hence the simplified boxy look. (also, each frame was hand drawn, so having the bots too complex would make animating it a real bitch.)
Bayverse Transformers evolved, allowing for a more complex, and thus more realistic design. Each piece of metal has to dual function not only as an underlying skeletal structure, but also as a sort of musculature. These new Bots are semi-organic, and a boxy, utilitarian design wouldn't fit. Plus, Optimus is more badass in the new movies. Deal with it.

If find the Quintesson origin with the Autobots as Consumer goods and the Decepticons as military tech much more interesting.
Do the bayformers even have an origin? They jsut...happened? By what magic? Sorry I haven't see movie #2 or 3.

Nathanoraptor In reply to MattMoylan [2013-03-01 19:13:16 +0000 UTC]
Why do you hate the movies? The character designs being different to the ones of G1? The fact that they tried to avoid mass shifting as much as possible (thereby making the ideas more realistic)? The fact that many classic characters were ignored? Or do you simply think live action was not the right medium for the franchise? Should the movies have been animated?

I dunno terrible writing? Terrible acting? Terrible directing? Mediocre special effects? Junk-pile transformations? That nobody involved with the movie cares at all about the IP?
š: 0 ā©: 1
Nathanoraptor In reply to MattMoylan [2013-03-14 16:31:15 +0000 UTC]
Junk-pile transformations? The point was to make them look more like they'd fit in the real world, to make them look more "alien". In G1, they were created as a labour force by the Quintessons, hence the boxy look. But in the movieverse they evolved and thus have to more "natural" (also because the boxy look is fine for animation but wouldn't work for live action).

They're lazy designs, that didn't really require any thought. the brilliance of a good transformer is making a vehicle that transformers into a robot and have both modes look good.
Movie TFs transformations are they easiest transformation you could design. They break into a bazillion piece of junk and they just rearrange them into whatever shape they want. they might as well just magically *poof* between modes.

In the first movie, it says that the Allspark has the ability to create planets and fill them with life. They evolved, created originally as life given to an inanimate piece of metal.

I'm on the fence. It was the Optimus Prime in Armada (and I mean just Armada, the other two were horrible) that I fell in love with and the movie version made him an epic leader so I love those two. Now only if the writers could combine those two.
