I always worry about these kind of strips too, that if you don’t know about the new movie, who is voicing Tenma in that movie, AND about one of that actor’s previous movies, you probably won’t get it… but oh well, I’m sure some of you commenters will explain it for people
Anyways, as you all know there are a lot of reinterpretations lately that I don’t like of some of my favorite properties. While many of them annoy the hell out of me, this new Astroboy movie just makes me very, very sad. They really have sucked all the life out of him(he’s been “
olar-Expressed” if you will). There’s not a trace of his Japanese origins, and therefore no trace of the real Atom. This is essentially Japan’s Mickey Mouse, and he deserves so much more respect than this.

I didn't mind the American Astro Boy movie. The only one that I thought looked weird was Dr. Tenma.

Although I LOVE the "Americanized" version of Astro Boy way more than his anime style (seriously, folks, I thinks it's a serious improvement and at the very least nothing to get upset over) I laughed so hard at this comic, 'cause the part with Tenma...i just...i just can't breathe... XD

Back in the 1980 Astroboy cartoon, they renamed most characters to be less Japanese sounding in the English dub. So Ochanomizu was renamed Dr. Elefun. I guess the film was doing a callback to that.

You guys should read Pluto. Naoki Urasawa is an awesome artist and storyteller, and Pluto is the best serious reboot of anything I have ever seen.

They surely sucked all the Tezuka out of him. This movie is really bad. I don't actually care if Tobio - oh, sorry, TOBY - died because of robot, but the thing is, the whole story lacks of Tezuka's drama, dillema between good and evil, robots and men.
Look at the Urasawa's Pluto - even though the artstyle are nothing like original and story are much darker, but it still Tezuka's story and characters! Read it and you understand what I mean. The movie is nothing like the original manga, it's just a generic "peace is good" Disney story.

To be fair, Japan has done it quite a few times to western things too, so... yeah xD I liked the movie because the animation was really well done, that's one thing that puts me off most Japanese animation- the shoddy way it's animated. Although Astroboy is old, so that is excused

oooh, I'm really sad to read thin in your discription... I never knew atsroboy before this movie, and I actually thought it was pretty nice.
I never played video games and I'm not well-informed about japaneseculture in general, but i can imagine that it sucks when they screw up the original...

At least the story is the same, his name is Toby, he dies, he get's a robot rebuilt, then he finds out about his powers? Well... It gets completely different afterwords, but I like some of the changes they did. Also, Didn't Japan kinda did the same thing to Micky?

Ever thought of suing the maker of that movie? I did like the movie though, because it had the child movie feel that we all like. If there's one thing that this movie did, is revive the Astro Boy Franchise, making it more popular than DBZ. That and the website for this movie had the history of Astro Boy

actually the movie was a huge financial flop. The company that made it, Imagi, even went bankrupt (too bad since their unfinished Gatachman CG movie looked pretty great)

So they're no longer working on Twilight, either? I HATE Twilight, so... It BUGGED me to watch that new Mighty Atom movie and see "SUMMIT ENTERTAINMENT". I was like "HELL NO. Atom is NOT a fairy vampire! OR a shameful werewolf!!!". The animation was cute though, I do give it that. But almost everything else was SO not worth going to the midnight showing dressed as Uran and carrying my Atom plush! D<
