Description Okay, I was absolutely overjoyed with how well this technique worked last night that I dropped everything and made a tutorial. Didn't get anything else that I was supposed to do accomplished, so please tell me you like this.

I started with 's "dots" brushes (ShadyMedusa_dots.abr) and started fiddling with my Wacom tablet. I love the darned thing, but have never really had much time to just sit and play with it. So, I loaded the brush set and started trying to replicate Sumi-e, or Japanese ink and brush technique. When I was six, my father was stationed in Honolulu (Pearl Harbor, to be exact) just twenty years after the attack. First off, let me just say that Hawaii is a GREAT place to grow up! I got most if not all of my open-mindedness trying new and very different foods and being introduced to a lot of different cultures there. At any rate, the very first art classes that I took was a public broadcasting series on Sumi-e. I asked my parents for a painting set, which they got for me, and which I still have and use today(it's one of my personal treasures, in fact). I created the Sumi-e wallpaper (see my gallery), which will soon reside on my laptop.

Needless to say, I wouldn't have thought that ink and brush would translate well to the digital world, but oh BOY was I wrong! I was so excited that I cranked this out right away. I don't know whether anyone else out there would be interested. Of course, I'm that old dog who's trying to learn new tricks, so this may be nothing new to many of you, but if not, give this a try and let me know how it works for you.

As usual, many other woderful techniques can be found at ; I highly recommend them!

PLEASE let me know if there's any way that I can improve on this. Also, if you are familiar with Sumi-e, any other techniques I might try. Any questions and/or feedback is of course welcome, and if you use this technique, please note me so I can see what ya done did, 'K?

One Minor Warning: File, even though it's a jpeg, is very BIG. Download will no doubt take a while, but hopefully I have made it worth your while.

Many thanks!
Mattski

Hello,

My name is Craig Lupine, I'm a budding artist of the traditional Sumi-E method and I'm extremely interetested in this tutorial. I was wondering if you could help me on a small matter regarding it. The thing is that I'm trying to look for the best brushes to use that would capture the same essence of using the actual bamboo brushes on Rice Paper, and to make the problem even harder, I need to find brushes that would be compatible with the program that is called GIMP. I know this may make the situation worse, but I really need some help on this; any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for reading, I wait for your reply.

Thanks,

~Craig Lupine

I realise it's something of a departure from your subject matter, but I used ideas from your tutorial to produce my first ever attempt at sumi-e...

This was a very helpful tutorial.Thank you for posting it; I tried, but like all other art, my body does not seem to have the mechanics to do it (photoshop or not). So to show my apprecition for your help, I'll give you the hirigana for your name. (I'd give you Kanji, but I have no clue as to what your name means if it means anything at all). So here you go --> まっ぀き. If your computer doesn't read Japanese, leme know, and I'll throw it on DA as an "art piece". But Shipuh is right right, Japanese artists generally use stamps, so try to make your signature look that way.
