Description

Mk28 Condor pinnace from David Weber's Honor Harrington series of books. Original design by Thomas Marrone. 3D mesh by me for BuNine. I used Blender 2.6x for the modeling and rendering.

Thank you for including this image, as well as all the others! I noticed the tailcone retracting as the pinnace approached HMS Fearless in your YouTube video, but I couldn't figure out why it was doing so. Now I know it's to protect the impeller nodes, and I know where on the pinnace the nodes are located. The small picture of the pinnace in my copy of "House Of Steel" doesn't give this much detail, so I appreciate your posting all this artwork on-line.
One other thing that impressed me was the way the pinnace's wings folded up just before docking. I hadn't figured on them doing so since it was never mentioned in any of the books, but it makes sense due to the limited amount of space available in the boat bays. Just like real-world naval fighter jets folding up their wings for storage aboard aircraft carriers for the same reason!
A question if I may: How large is this pinnace, in meters and feet? What present-day terrestrial aircraft is it comparable to in size?
It's attention to details like these that make these ships seem all the more plausible - keep up the good work!

Thanks for the comments!

Yeah, I've gotten comments elsewhere about the nodes on the pinnace, ranging from, "I never knew the pinnace had them" to "They won't work because of the obstruction of the recess they're in."  Meh.  I let others in BuNine handle the "physics" of the discussion - all I do is take their sketches and other line art and make something 3D out of it.

The wings were a bit tricky, because we had to have the break out far enough that we could also sweep the wings, but not so far that it wouldn't make much of a difference in space-savings.  Then there was getting them to fold without clipping into the top of the inner wing section...

The pinnace is 30m long, or roughly 100 feet.  Much smaller than the original textev statement of "the size of a pre-space jumbo jet", mainly due to The Great Resizing.  A comparable real-world aircraft - not only in size, but also function in many ways - would be the C-130 Hercules.
