Requested back when I was going through my second pool toy phase.
Ad: "Introducing the Inflata-fun brand Dragon Pool Float! This cute little dragon is the perfect friend for anyone who doesn't mind that their friend is a lifeless mass of latex and air, or a very nice decoration for any backyard family pool for that matter..."
Newspaper Article: "...some of these pool toys have reportedly been fully self-aware and very much alive, but there are very few incidents recorded, and there has been no proven reason so far that the pool toys were actually alive. It is suspected that the person, or persons, responsible for the reports were either playing a prank on the company, seeing things, or under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol."
Tom was a man who lived a very boring and uneventful life, he worked as an employee at a local corporation that produced inflatable toys, he was single and never married, and he lived in an old, run-down house that just so happened to have a basement. Tom was fairly average, except for his... hobby. Tom hated his job, and the corporation he worked for, and only worked there because it payed well, so one day he had enough with the company, and bought a copy of their hottest inflatable at the time: A bright red fox with a white underside. After purchasing said fox, he went to his basement, filled it up, grabbed a large steak knife, and popped it. This started his hobby of buying the latest inflatables and symbolically killing them, as a statement to how much he hatted his job. Little did he know, a few of them, including the red fox, were alive before he popped them.
Tom never would have thought the reports about the new dragon pool toy were true, but soon he would find out, first-hand, that they in fact were.
Tom went to his local superstore and bought the new dragon, and suspected nothing. He went home, opened the box, and before he could even fill the dragon up, it looked up at him, blinked, and said "Hewwo?"
Tom was frightened and shocked by what he had just experienced, and went to his bedroom to go think about what had just happened.
Meanwhile, the dragon got itself out of the box, still deflated, found the electric air pump, and inflated itself.
Tom heard the horrifyingly cute voice speak again "Hewwo? Mistur Suited Man?"
Tom hid in the closet, trying to understand what was going on. The dragon opened the closet, and said "Found you, Mistur!"
Tom screamed like a little girl, then felt the dragon hug him. Tom started to calm down. "Why were you afwaid?" asked the dragon.
"Because this shouldn't be happening right now." Tom replied.
"Can I call you Mastur?" asked the dragon. Tom replied with "Yeah...,sure... D-do you have a name?"
"I don't have a name, could you give me one, mastur?" said the dragon.
Tom said "Well, let me think... Squeaky? No. Scales? No, you don't have any... hmmmmmmm... How about... (Tom thought about combining the words "Squeak" and "Latex") Squeax?"
"I wub it!" said Squeax.
This was the beginning of a beautiful friendship.
