In this case, a normal black ball-pen - wiping it with a tissue every line or two. I also try to make some spaces between the lines, differentiating the thickness, to make the lineart seem more thin than in reality.

Thanks for this... I'm at art school studying comics and everyone just magically seems to know how to use water colours really well. Last time I used them was in high school about two or three years ago... I owned a really shitty water colour set but never used them, because they were really bad quality and I didn't know what to do with them. XD

Ah, I know what you mean... Those really basic sets for children are really no good for anything. xD; I wouldn't draw anything with water colours if I only had a set like that. Besides, you also can't quite start if you don't have the right paper. There's so much to prepare before even beginning, eh...
Good luck with your paintings and with the studies! :3

Yeah, I got some nice paper now, I'm just waiting for my order of fillable water brushes to come so I can draw more on the go. Now if I just found a good sketch book that had paper for water colours, I'd be all set to become the master of water colours... x)

Ja mam pytanie...
Gdy malujesz bazowy kolor, a potem chcesz na niego nałożyć jakieś ładne cienie, to czekasz aż podstawa przeschnie, czy jeden na drugi nakładasz od razu?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Megan-Uosiu In reply to KawaiiJumi [2012-09-01 14:26:07 +0000 UTC]

Um, przepraszam, beznadziejnie tłumaczę takie rzeczy. OTL'' Jeśli nie zrozumiałaś, to spróbuję inaczej... ._.'''

Thank you for making this tutorial. I have learned a lot that I didn't know about from other tutorials out there!!

I am mostly self taught and trying to advance my skills as a watercolor artist (of only 2 months old TT.TT, however I have been drawing for 20 years) and your tutorial has given me some new things to try out. So thank you

thanks a lot for this tutorial, id always do the lineart first, then after painting id have to go over it agin to fix my mistakes D: but doing it after seems SO much easier, im really glad you pointed that out just one question, what do you do for large areas that you want painted one solid colour? ive always had trouble with that

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Megan-Uosiu In reply to Irrellephant [2011-07-25 11:23:05 +0000 UTC]

Yup, this is rather troublesome, because you have to work really quick to not let the paint dry. xD Hm... a good idea is to have a big brush, but that not always is enough if you have detailed borders... I guess you could use a masking fluid then. And just paint over everything with a really big brush then. That should do the trick.
Personally I don't think big, textureless spaces are good for any drawing, so I prefer to draw backgrounds by bits - adding textures, making a few layers of paint, etc.

I don't know if this helps. xD''
And I'm sorry for a late reply - I only check my Message Box just so often... OTL'''

Hey I just wanted to ask , would ou be able to acheive similar effects with watercolour pencils ?
I really need to know because I am going to buy some soon.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Megan-Uosiu In reply to Aicent [2011-02-03 22:37:51 +0000 UTC]

Totally not. Watercolour pencils are like... crap. No, seriously, you're better off buying normal water colours and a brush. D: Well, you need a brush anyway. But my point is - watercolour pencils are... not very... effective. ._.' You can get a blurred drawing rather than a painting with them and you can hardly do any good details. I guess a genius who could draw with anything would be able to do something even with them, but water colours are still better. :<

Aicent In reply to Megan-Uosiu [2011-02-03 22:50:18 +0000 UTC]

Whew you saved me some money there then , okay I will go buy me some water colours then , any brand you reccomend for beginners , i still consider myself a beginner because i havent watercoloured in years now.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Megan-Uosiu In reply to Aicent [2011-02-03 23:07:05 +0000 UTC]

I don't know what brands you have in your country, but I recommend the cheaper ones (based on honey and gum arabic). They have brighter, stronger colours. It is said that they won't keep their colours as well as those expensive ones after years (centuries), but that should not be an issue on our level, right? So choose the ones which are about half the price of those others.

This is so use full to me!! thank you for making these But I have one question , I have been trying to use salt on my paintings and I have a book who explains how to use salt, but I just dont seem to get it right.. do you use salt on youre paintings? How then?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Megan-Uosiu In reply to Animaleson15 [2011-02-03 22:43:17 +0000 UTC]

I don't, but I saw people do it. It works much better on bigger paintings. You have to spread it equally on the surface where you want to get the effect; not too much in one place, just a few grains per cm2. You have to spread it on the WET surface, don't forget!
Then you wait for it to dry and the effect should appear. It's a lottery, so I don't like using it, but as I said - it's great for bigger paintings.

Another technique, which I actually used at some point, is using a sprinkler with clean water on the wet surface. The effect is a little different, but also nice. It works good only on big surfaces, just like the salt.

Wow, I didn't know many of the tips you said, like the lineart one... I tend to do first the lineart then the painting, but I do agree that doing the lineart at the end is better... really, really useful, thanks for sharing your knowledge!!!

This is really helpfull...
And it is a good idea to do the lineart after. I usually do it first( until a while I did it with a pen, but now started doing it with a color pencil xD)... Maybe I will start doing it after...

Thanks!
