Nobody likes to play with assholes, but sometimes there’s a story behind every player they had to play with. I heard way too many people dumping the MvM mode because of the teams they have to play with. I surely wouldn't stand that game mode for too long if I only played in Boot Camps
I take people like that with me on Mann Ups to show that this game mode is so much fun, once you have a reliable and a reasonable team.

About shotguns – none of them can be considered a terrible mistake to be picked. They don’t have any big downside like, for example, the Eureka Effect does.
It’s more a matter of dealing damage, which isn’t as important for Engie’s shotgun. That’s his sentry’s job.
The most recommended primaries are the ones that somewhat support the team.

I didn’t mention Gunslinger in the comic because That “wrench” is just bad. Sure, on MvM Dispenser is the most important building, but why would anybody choose to limit himself with a minisentry? Extra 25hp? It doesn’t make any big difference when you pretty much stay away from the robots.

And a quick explanation of the ending for the slower folks: This engi used to stick to the boot camp trainings and then complain about the bad teammates he had to deal with there, so Strict decided to show him a better side of the MvM and took him on a Mann Up together with his team.

It's a link between beggining and the end of the comic. Strict was missing an engineer for his mission and decided to take the one that walked into the room instead.

I'm gonna ask you something for the Engineer's primary. would the Frontier Justice be a good option? you know it's whole "Revenge crit" thing, wouldn't that be very helpful? I mean the -50% clip size isn't really an issue since you usually start off with enough money to increase it

Well that is another issue of "damage vs support" type. As much as FJ is a primary that can deal the biggest amount of damage, the extra few dmg points is not really worth what weapons like Rescue Rancer could provide. Picking buildings up from a far distance could be a very good causal or last resort method of dealing with sentry busters or just having your sentry dying before you reach it. Not to mention RR's linear shots can provde great against distant support targets, like robot-snipers or obvious robot-spies you notice approaching.

All in all, FJ is not a terrible choice, but in my opinion it's not your primary weapon you should stuff your money into. It's your Sentry. It will always deal higher damage than what you can get with constant crits of FJ. And Sentry's ability to even bodyblock Giant Scouts is really making it worth saving at all costs, even cost of primary weapon.

Well damn, it sure been a while since I was talking about MvM. A whole year I think.

And what about the Widowmaker, a shot gun where you never have to reload, so you don't have to use money on "reload speed" or "clip size"

same story, it's all either damage or how useful weapon is in the game. If you can handle yourself without Rescue ranger then you're good to go with pretty much anything. But RR is just the most comfortable.

i agree 100% with that engie, spot on with the wrenches. (i personally always use the jag.) secondaries wrangler hands down. and primaries vary for me. i sometimes use the pomson but not allot of the time. i used the frontier justice allot at the start cause the extra crits helped allot if my sentry ever got destroyed, but now i almost always use the rescue ranger. it's very useful to repair my stuff if im currently away from it and it's great for fooling sentry busters. it may not be the best for offence but that's my sentry's job for the most part.

I don't think I have seen anyone mention this yet, after you wrangle a sentry you should pick it up and place it down again. the sentry in mvm will rebuild near instantly and will save the few seconds when the sentry is inactive from the wrangler

RainingMetal [2015-01-12 14:20:11 +0000 UTC]

For shotguns I usually pick the Frontier Justice. Upgrading that thing with a full crit reserve after every wave can do some good against spies and giants.

Don't waste money on upgrading primary weapon. Stick to upgrading Sentry and Resistances

thelakotanoid1 In reply to Menaria [2015-03-09 03:42:52 +0000 UTC]

if anything, upgrade firing speed and reload but that's ONLY if you have extra after getting your main upgrades. (frontier justice i mean) that way you can repair your stuff from a distance much faster.

True. When I max out on those I tend to upgrade shotgun firing speed, magazine, and reload speeds, but only for the Frontier Justice.

i would also consider that for the rescue ranger. upgrades like that can really help the dispenser if you're currently away from it.

So, the Spy is the last class for the guide series. Rather appropriate considering the Spy's role in MvM.

I can't wait to see how Strict will deal with the Spy! One of the most unappreciated classes in MvM, due to everyone screaming "USELESS!" as soon as one joins a group. At least from my experience 8D The Spy also thinks very highly of himself, seeing all the other guys in Team Fortress as simpleminded morons or psychopaths, so I doubt he'll respect or even listen to a word Strict has to throw at him... O.o

They may do it again this year, but if not you can craft some Metal to trade on a community market, if you haven't purchased anything from the store at least once avoid trading directly on steam.  They don't allow F2P accounts to give their items since people could just create accounts to farm equipment.

The short circuit ?
The thing is, at times, so many stuff will be flying at you, so the loss is much bigger than any good it may do. Not to mention you waste metal using it. And robosnipers can still hit you. You lose damage for not using the wrangler anyways. Boooooooooooo. Adapted from: steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles…
Some of your guides (don't get me wrong, they're pretty good) have opposing key points compared to those I see in steam community, mostly about weapons.

👍: 1 ⏩: 1

Menaria In reply to jcieph3 [2014-11-06 23:31:54 +0000 UTC]

I didn't want to exclude Short Circuit from a list of acceeptable weapons, simply because it COULD work in hands of a decent Engineer.

Also I'd get much more negativity if I say SC is a bad pick.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

jcieph3 In reply to Menaria [2014-11-06 23:45:16 +0000 UTC]

That makes sense. I just thought that since the sc uses up metal (and at times, it can drain a lot of it) it lags behind the wrangler.
On a side note, the wrangler works wonders in mvm.

iWantcoal [2014-10-15 01:57:46 +0000 UTC]

I tend to switch to hosp for spy missions, the bleeding really wrecks spybots.
Also in the missions with Steel Gauntlets (pretty much all advances+), the bleeding negates the damage resistance, dealing more damage than any other wrench, if you are in need of an urgent defense.
But when we have a competent enough pyro, stock is the way to go.
HOWEVER I have something against the Jag.
In MvM, deploying buildings is instant, rendering half of its ability useless, and rather than 30% faster build rate a single upgrade canteen works much better.
With pretty much no bonuses, the jag still deals less damage to spies, not a good choice to me.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Menaria In reply to iWantcoal [2014-10-15 07:53:03 +0000 UTC]

Damage doesn't really matter in case of wrench, because you can kill spies even with your shotgun/wrangler.
So Jag isn't really a strongly downsided weapon.
But Hospitality is, since it lowers your fire resistance.
Then again, the best pick is just to stick to the stock wrench.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

jcieph3 In reply to Menaria [2014-10-19 00:32:21 +0000 UTC]

Then again, unless it's flare pyros, any other kind of pyro usually will not even bother with engineers... I think.

👍: 0 ⏩: 0

CreeperT [2014-10-07 23:09:51 +0000 UTC]

I could never get behind the Southern hospitality in any game-mode. Sure, it's good for that rare spy you MIGHT whack with your wrench, but anything this wrench can do, a Pyro can do better. Especially one with the homewrecker or Neon annihilator.

Also, if I may ask, in Two cities, what should I change to in the final wave if I decided to play scout for majority of the mission?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Menaria In reply to CreeperT [2014-10-08 09:18:03 +0000 UTC]

That depends from the map and mission.

In Mannhattan with 10 Giant Deflector Heavies in the last wave, it's Heavy/Sniper (Avoid projectile-using classes, since they're going to be deflected. Pyro/Spy won't do any good as well, since they die pretty often and everytime Giant gets a kill, it heals for a ton.)

In Mannhattan with Giant Black Boxes + Giant Medics, pretty much everythig works. Heavy/Sniper are teh best picks.

Same goes for a Rottenburg with giants at the end.

For a Rottenburg with 3 tanks, pyro is doing just a fine job, but in fact, you can use whatever you desire. It's a really easy wave and even the freakiest loadouts will work.

To be honest, this had to be the second time I had to come back to this guide when I got back to normal Boot camp after having to play "Uber Upgrades" for a time.

Yes, It is that handy and I both love and recommend it.

I'm way too used to the vintage southern hospitality, Festive wrangler and strange rescue ranger loadout in both MVM and PVP modes.

FINALLY someone who UNDERSTANDS! I've been playing MvM bootcamp for ages now because I may or may not be prohibited from spending money on tf2 so I don't have Mann up tickets....(I ain't f2p though. so don't judge.) but the teams on bootcamp are SO BAD. the engineer stays in mid battlefield when there's a sentry buster, places his dispenser hidden and the teleporter in the worst possible spots. and then whenever I try an tell em how to play the game, they hear that I'm a girl and I get kicked. might be a slightly different story here but the moral is all the same thing. serious and good people are hard to be found in bootcamps and bad teammates drive you insane, forcing you to carry the entire team on your shoulders while being verbally attacked for 'killstealing' while you are the only one that does something.
