Description My interpretation of Wotan/Woden/Odin, father of the Gods, here shown as the wanderer.
This was my Yuletide card for 2008 and was drawn in a rush within two hours without any sketch or conceptual planning.

For the background I used a photo of mine that I altered using standard photo software.

After this picture made a grand tour through all the internet - sometimes under circumstances I wasn't alltogether happy with - I decided to give it an update. You can find the new version here:

Odin is the ruler and the king, the wizard, story-teller and bringer of strife. As a storm-god, he brings inspiration and ecstatic trance. His names correspond to Old German Odem (Atem), meaning breath (of life), and Wut, meaning wrath. Odin knows the future and knows that death and doom will come over all! Because of that, he wanders the world cunningly weaving strife, so that the best warriors are taken by death in battle in their physical prime, to join his host in Walhall in the best possible condition for the future battle of RagnarΓΆk, the doom of the Gods.
This is not a particularly nice God, and none you should pray to if you want to enjoy a long life!
Yet he is not mean either, but driven by necessity. There is no plain good vs evil in Norse Mythology, it's more the struggle to maintain order against the always threatening Chaos, and hard times may need hard decisions.
So Odin is the god of leaders and politicians.

I've seen this picture around a lot through the years, too bad people keep stealing art and not linking back to the original upload but now I found it. Even though it's a sketch, this picture always stood out to me for how expressive it is. Especially the way you drew Odin's face, you can see his cunning, his scheming nature, there's more than a hint of the fury that his name might be based on, it makes you wonder what is going on in his mind at this moment. I bet he's a great poker player.

Thank you for your comment - and for finding your way here. As the story went, at some time some guy made a t-shirt from my drawing! It quickly disappeared when I called him out, but then I thought: Hell, I could do this myself. So I made a new backgroundand made it available as a t-shirt mys elf. You can find it here: shop.spreadshirt.net/meredyth-…

And I guess you're right: Odin will be THE poker player

Actually, I think it was about one hour for the character, then just some additional time I spent on the background. I just took a fineliner and started drawing - no pencils, no sketch, no corrections. If I could do this anytime, I'd be in the business...

I love this. WHen I saved it and looked at it again words appeared on it : "Hail Allfather: My Life Devoted to You" but that's not appearing here. Interesting though because I wear the valknot and am devoted to Odin. This is now my desktop background. (if its cool with you that I use it for that).

This is exactly how I imagine the Alfather to look like.
And Gungnir! I really like how simple it is, just like any other spear of the viking age.
Nice to see someone that keeps the fantasy details on a low level, if you know what I mean

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Meredyth In reply to SortenUld [2012-05-15 10:07:40 +0000 UTC]

I understand you perfectly. As I am a reenactor myself and keep in contact with archaeologists and museum people over the year, I try to draw details as historically correct as possible. Of course there is always a deal speculation and fantasy involved, but I flinch every time I see a horned helmet and that kind of stuff

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

SortenUld In reply to Meredyth [2012-05-15 16:40:53 +0000 UTC]

Oh the bloody horns!

Of course there's fantasy involved, there's a lot of
fantasy in reenactment as well. I don't think we're supposed to avoid it,
but to add just the right amount of it

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Meredyth In reply to SortenUld [2012-05-16 08:26:43 +0000 UTC]

Agreed.
Without imagination there is no progress, and without experimental archaeology and some reenactment history still would be as dull as in 1960
