Description
A DA friend tells me this probably a song sparrow, (and I suspect a juvenile.) I'm in south central Kansas but these birds are apparently common, at least they are in the countryside. I'm a city livin' guy. I need to get out more.Related content

It took me a while but I would suggest it's a song sparrow, Melospiza melodia.
Reverse image searches led me to yandex.com/images/search?from=… , which I thought was the closest match, and here's the Wikipedia page, which backs up the range in which it is found:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Song_spa…
So unless someone else comes back with a better alternative I'm going to call the copy I downloaded Song Sparrow!

Thank you SO much (for doing that diligent search work.) I believe you are probably correct. Does it look like a juvenile to you?

I'm no twitcher but I do believe juveniles tend to have that punky thing going on with their head feathers in many species!
