Description
I figured, since I was taking pictures of what I was doing, I'd turn it into a pseudo-tutorial. Only, it's more of a guide (as I keep saying). Um, definitely not the best thing out there, I'd say; this was my very first attempt in prop-making, um, ever? the only prior experience I've had to this is like...modifying some necklaces into rings and such. But not like this. I had a lot of fun with it, though. On ebay they had a ton of steampunk guns, but they cost like $30 and I didn't really want to spend that much money, so I made my own. It was much cheaper for me to make it than to buy one, haha.
So yeah, since this is my first time attempting something like this, please don't be so harsh on me if I did something wrong (although I like how it came out, so nothing's wrong with it for meee). Also, I couldn't find a steampunk gun tutorial on dA, so...I guess this is the first one? I mean, I know there's a finger gun tutorial, but this is the first one I've seen on here that's a gun. not that the finger gun isn't a gun. That idea is genius, by the way; if you haven't seen that tutorial go check it out.
total time was three days, but not three full days. I spent maybe...two, three hours on it one day, 4-5 the next, and then maybe like three today. most of my time i think is spent on me just STARING at it thinking of what to do next, haha. but special thanks to ~PirateStar01 for helping me out when i needed an extra opinion
let me know if i'm unclear on anything and thanks for looking!

& thanks to ~Insolation for letting me know my gun model: Tech Target (Tech Target Blaster), sold for ~$20.

the gun? you don't necessarily have to use the same model (: the primary purpose of this tutorial is to outline one of many ways to customize a Nerf gun. you could apply the same basic principle of this modification to any other type of gun. the results won't always be exactly the same, but that's the fun of it - whatever the results are, it's a one of a kind creation of yours (:

I completely winged both of my guns, maverick: [link] first and screwed up the shooting (can't shoot), nite finder: [link] I actually used black primer, and sponge brush with gold paint, I have people asking for this on facebook, but I winged both, but using experience from the maverick I improved

they look good (: yeah, i read up on how others did their guns and just ran with it. the color of your primer doesn't matter as long as you paint over it because the primer is the base coat. it'll eventually chip away if you don't have an actual coat of real paint over it.

Lovely tutorial! One question though: do you you use only one color of paint for the fake wood effect?

Merusan In reply to imadreameroflove [2012-07-12 04:24:32 +0000 UTC]
That's what i did (: i'm not sure if using different shades would work well, but it's worth experimenting. the fake wood effect is really just a bunch of paint layered thickly on top of each other. perhaps using different shades would make it more realistic, in some ways (:

Awesome tutorial, but I'm curious about what you mean by primer. I went to the store and the only primer they have is white paint. Why is yours red and a spray?

Merusan In reply to Reidluver [2011-10-12 21:27:46 +0000 UTC]
which store did you go to? i had some laying around so i'm not entirely too sure where you could buy them. but they should carry them in any stores they have wood/paint/building materials such as Ace Hardware or Home Depot.
the brand I used was Krylon, i think; here's an example: [link]
it's red just because it's the colour of the primer; i would have preferred to use a more metallic coloured primer so that if the top coat was damaged or something the red wouldn't come through, but i didn't have any on hand. it's a spray because...well, i figured if i was spraypainting the colours of the gun, i'd might as well use spraypaint paint for everything, including primer. i'm not entirely knowledgeable on all things paint and wood, though, but just to be safe i would say to use spray primer. i hope you find some, though!

Oh I just checked out a small store to see. I'll definitely look at other places. Thanks for the help though! Now that I know it exists it helps. And the primer is necessary to keep the color on the gun, right? Gotta get some now. Thanks!
