Description
As the dusk fell away to usher in the hours of twilight, a large shadow moved through the trees without note; the soft brush of the forest floor giving way to the quiet steps of its massive paws.
The air was crisp with the pristine winds of change. The hot summer months were coming to their end and autumn was well on its way. Still, the present chill in the air did not stop those who live here; like the fireflies who dance through darkness with their unmitigated displays of light and beauty.
The Guardian watched this, and sighed in delight as the firefly's display seemed to grow and consume the space around her. Their soft and ever-present glow of light made the forest floor aluminate like the night sky itself.
She considered herself a very fortunate and blessed creature to be present to such beautiful things.
But suddenly, a massive murder of crows streaked through the sky, screeching in unison as a disarranged siren. The Guardian looked to the heavens and watched as they careened through the lush, green covering and disappeared into the trees on the mountain side. But then, the Guardian's attention fell to a lone crow darting through the branches beneath the canopy.
"Tarren?" The Guardian called out.
The crow nearly stopped in mid-flight turning its head. It saw the Guardian standing motionless in the trees. "Maiara! Thank the Spirits! I've been looking everywhere for you!!"
The crow, rearing up into the higher branches, plunged downward only to land in a perch on the Guardian's horn. "Maiara, humans have been spotted entering the Eyverwood Forest along the Eastern border...and...They have guns."
The Guardian; Maiara, stood unmoving in her stance; her attention now focused to the east. From the pit of her chest, she set loose a subdued yet menacing snarl.
Fixing her icy, azure-blue eyes on the crow roosting on her horn, she spoke steely and quick. "Find Ekon. Tell him to gather his fellow wolves and move all the animals to our southern borders."
As the crow turned swiftly to take to the sky, he found himself pausing when Maiara exhaled sharply. He turned his head to find that her gaze was still firmly set on him. "Also, Tarren, if you see Alec, tell him to meet me by the Solstice Stone at Daitus Falls. That fox has an uncanny talent for moving about unseen, and that expertise could come in handy."
Resting his wings firmly against his sides, the crow paused, obviously confused. "What are you going to do?"
Maiara's gaze only hardened as her attention was again pulled back to the east. She unknowingly allowed her jaw to unclench permitting a low, ominous growl to escape her throat. Her sharpened teeth bare now more than ever. "First, I'm going to see what these humans want.”
“And if they’re hunters?” Tarren asked, his voice barely hiding a quiver of fear.
“Then I will take any necessary actions needed.” Maiara said, her tone far lower and more ominous than ever. “This forest is not just my home, but is home for many who seek refuge. From the smallest mouse to the largest reindeer; we all call this place home. And I will not willingly allow humans to desecrate this place by taking a single animal’s life. Such an act would only be a beginning to a greater threat.”
Just then, the feeling of the forest changed. What once felt beautiful and tranquil now seemed foul and unsettled. It was almost as though the trees themselves where at discontent. Maiara could feel this unrest. It was all around them and it set the hard, ebony plates protecting her skin on edge.
“No creature in this forest can grasp the gravity of a human’s presence in the Eyverwood Forest like I can. I know what humans are and what they’re capable of because I used to be one. They are a cruel, vicious, ravenous race that cut down anything in their path. To them, enough is NEVER enough. True, the humans entering now may just be hunters or even surveyors…but they’re always the first – and they’re most certainly NEVER the last. Before you know it, loggers will be coming through with their trucks, excavators, and saws, then they’ll build roads, homesteads and cities and before anyone knows what happened, these lands will be nothing more but a concrete wasteland.”
Moving slowly towards the east, then quickening her pace with Tarren still perched aloft, Maiara cringed at the very thought. “That cannot happen, Tarren. I won’t let it. This forest, like me, is the only one of its kind; and I, its appointed Atka; so long as a breath of life moves me, will act as its provider and protector…”
Atka – Inuit term meaning “Guardian Spirit”
Okay – so, don’t ask what possessed me to do this. I really don’t know.
To be honest, this is an idea for a story that I’ve had floating around in my brain for quite a while now.
“Maiara Welsh, the daughter to the famous multi-millionaire, Christian A. Welsh; is society’s poster-child for how the rich should live. They had everything; private jets, a fleet of fancy sports cars, 2 mansions and a summer house, and not to mention maids and waiters always at beck and call. It was true, Maiara had it all. But with Maiara, enough was never enough.
But during a hiking trip with some friends to Alaska’s Denali State park, and a chance encounter with an Inuit shaman, Maiara’s entire life is about to be turned upside down, and she’ll realize just how ‘beastly’ she really is.”
So – yeah, I guess you can say that it’s…KIND OF like a "Beauty & The Beast" thing – yet…it’s TOTALLY different…
I’m still kind of on the fence about whether or not I actually want to start writing this story…so…idk…what do you guys think? It would be a totally original story mind you with all original characters…
I’d love to hear what you all think. Thanks guys. =]
