Description
I had some Rock Maple scraps that I finally decided to turn. I've always loved maple for flooring and cabinetry but I must say it makes a rather boring bowl. The only interesting grain is the "Quartersawn" part and you just don't get to see much of it with this shape. Not to mention, the wood is so hard it took me forever just to hollow the thing out. My gouge would just heat up and lose it's edge immediately. Ended up having to work with a pointy scraper type tool (Not sure what it's called lol). My first and last attempt using kiln dried maple. I still plan on turning green logs at some point though. They should have much more character. Especially if they are "Burly".Related content

hey concerning Poly if it's old add a small amount of turps with it & it'll be less lumpy. I was a furniture colourer & brush stainer so have 5 yrs experience with poly---brush it on & dry & then rub back with 380 grit sandpaper & give it up to 4 coats & you'll get it to glass smoothness & a final rub back with Scotchbrite--a rough nylon pad & final coat--try that!!!

Did you burn or scorch the edges and then sand to clean up? Nice touch!

Yup, just get the lathe moving fast and apply a wood of similar density and wait for smoke You can get a much more precise effect with piano wire but there is no way I am wasting a perfectly good E string from my guitar! That said, I do prefer the wood on wood burning effect. It seems a little more natural and it doesn't dig in.

Many thanks. I think in most cases with wood, not all, but most, the 'natural' method is the way to go. Your bowl looks natural. I'll give it a try someday.

So that's your maple Ours is pretty much the same colour---& what I would call Semi-Hardwood---does it burn & leave black marks if you sand it? Ours does

Yeah, it burns easily with friction. Hehe, Semi-Hardwood. Around here it is about as hard as it gets

Thanks and no I don't know anything about steam bending. The only experience I have with it was when I tried to recurve a bowstave. But that just involved getting some rocks red hot in a fire and then holding the end of the stave above them while I poured water slowly over them. I then bent the end to shape and then wedged it between 2 trees overnight (same for the other side). It did keep it's shape so I know the technique works but the bow ended up snapping at the handle anyway I didn't really carve it right in the first place lol.

Lol, NP. I would suggest finding a more sophisticated method though. I was just trying to make the bow as authentic as possible
