This thing was simple yet terrifying. It makes it that much harder to believe that people hated Galactus's design in the second Fantastic Four movie knowing that this could have inspired it.

One thing that I liked from the original compared to the upgraded fix, the Original was this blue color when it was active, while the redone version looked sort of a grey with highlights, but when the constellation blows up inside it, in the original version, it turns grey after the kaboom, while in the redone, it pretty much stays the same color.
Just was fun to think of how it was running in the original, and then when it was turned off, the color fades away.

The Planet Killer was designed and built to blow away the Borg!
In fact it was supposed to go to the Delta quandrant to do just that butit unfortunately passed through the alpha quadrant to get there.

That episode, more than any other, had me on the edge of my seat. One of the best bits of "space drama" ever done.

The Doomsday Machine. This thing scared the hell out of me as a child. There was something SO threatening about it.

Also in this episode was (in my opinion) one of the most heartwrenching scenes ever:
Kirk: "There is no third planet"
Decker: "Don't you think I know that? There was, but not anymore"

Yes, a little bit of personal tragedy thrown in. What would it have been like to watch that happen? How agonizing.

You got this one damn close. If it helps any...The body of the DD machine was made of aluminium foil.

Actually, it was a wind sock dipped in concrete.

Alas, since no "behind the scenes" photos of this model have surfaced yet, fans passionately debate what was used in its construction. Spinrad himself made a comment about a "wind-sock dipped in cement," but I have to wonder why make a one time model from such a heavy material?
Like SpanglerArt, I suspect inexpensive cooking foil was used, but I (and some others) think translucent sheets of plastic, possibly scrap pieces of colored lighting "gels" were applied over the foil. If one looks at the shots of the "maw" straight on, there are some "things" that look suspiciously like strips of common transparent adhesive tape securing the "materials". I could well be wrong, but I thought I'd toss that out there.
It is pretty clear most of the shots of the "weapon" were static photos that had the cmaera pan past the image. Only when we saw the device "turn" to face the bridge crew on the main viewer did they film the model itself.
Sincerely,
Bill
