Nothing showed the true nature of Darth Vader more than this scene from Star Wars Rebels,where Vader's mask took a gash in the eye and cheek, exposing Anakin partially.
It was freaky seeing "the man" almost breaking through Vader's mask,
and really just showed in one still image what he really is.
Not so much the "ultimate evil", but a broken man who is hiding his pain
underneath a literally armored shell of Anger, and Hatred.
(But, yeah. It is still pretty Badass.)

It's moments like these that make villains that appear evil all the way look more sympathetic and human. That's what makes some of the greatest villains known ALL around: Their appearance of humanity, however the amount may be.
It also shows that their humanity can, at times, lead to redemption. Sure, there may be some long shots but still, you saw what Vader's remaining human qualities had led to in the end, right?
