So you created a Time Machine with which you went back in time to consult with Escher in its design
Amazingly realised piece of flame design

This is amazing stuff. Whole lots of stuff going on, but not enough to ruin the point.

How you did the swirly background?

The swirly background is just part of the flame

This piece reveals your exquisite control of Apophysis..
Is this piece using the image overlay technique from Joel's Apo version?

what render settings did you use for that?

You're probably not old enough to know what I'm talking about, but this reminds me of an old TV series titled The Time Tunnel. Two guys travel around through the use of a machine which looked something like this.
I like the shapes and colors and the energy. The lines draw the eye inward and then you see the swirl, which adds to the feel of movement. Nice work!

Nope. Not that old. I see some similarities though

I am fortunately - or unfortunately depending on one's perspective - old enough to know. Had completely forgotten about it until now. Great show (in it's day). Great analogy.
Very cool piece - Michael - your virtuosity with this program continues to astound me. Great work!

tryin to figure it out, all i can see is a bit of maybe juliaN or juliascope, and bubble+swirl in the middle i believe,
is there some foo in there by any chance? i really only have a remedial understanding of what all the variations do, so i might just be guessing based on my past experiences.
great job.

The only JuliaN in there is the border around the centre blur. The main shapes in there are made with Spherical, Swirl and some devious stuff too.
