Hey thank you so much! I used this animation to make my own gear here. [link]

The reason I made it is because I wanted to use it for navigation buttons for an exercise website in my internet class. If you want to take a look at what I did for the class you can see it here:[link]

.....But that test site will only be up until May 2011.

Thanks again!

What a pity I only have Photoshop Elements, I'd have liked to have given this tutorial a shot, maybe learn how to make a flapping raven for my avatar.

That's a pretty good method and works well for beginners. Thanks for creating this and explaining it so well. Great job.

I wish I had this tutorial when I was puzzling it out the first time. It'd have been damn sight easier. You've saved a lot of grief and hair pulling for folk in the future learning it for the first time and it's a nice reference for the rest. Thanks.

It's very useful, if you need web images or animation.

It can get pretty complicated.
I see you made a new avatar with with what you learned here.
That makes me feel good.

FotoFigure In reply to mick-mick [2005-08-30 08:32:03 +0000 UTC]

i think 'bout making something bigger and more complicated i made this avatar, 'cuz i had to try sth while doing tutorial i also think it will help me a bit with my other problems with animating things - i never thought you can use ImageReady to animate. have the program for two years but used only photoshop

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mick-mick In reply to FotoFigure [2005-08-30 22:55:41 +0000 UTC]

If not for animation, I dont think I'd ever open ImageReady either.
Together those two programs can do more than you or I'd imagine.

this is a nifty tutorial. I tried making an avatar for my brother in photoshop. I didn't know how to animate in imageready so I saved each frame seperatly. the tediousness of it nearly killed me
(select => rotate x degrees => rotate 2nd gear x degrees => save as) x 20
wish I had found this sooner

Yah, the tutorial has been taken many directions.
Its more a tutorial on rotating than gears.

DavidR-XV [2004-07-21 07:16:20 +0000 UTC]

does this work in Photoshop 5.0 (LE) for windows?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mick-mick In reply to DavidR-XV [2004-07-24 16:04:48 +0000 UTC]

LE = Leaning Edition. Which means it is a student copy. It is a full version.
I am honestly unsure. A few things might be different but the basics should be the same.
I am sure you could do this in 5.0. I never had it so I cant say for certain.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DavidR-XV In reply to mick-mick [2004-07-24 20:42:57 +0000 UTC]

hmm I though that LE meant Limited Edition. .

well I don't have any animation type features here. SO it won't work.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mick-mick In reply to DavidR-XV [2004-07-25 00:30:50 +0000 UTC]

Adobe Photoshop Limited Edition 5.0
I stand corrected.
Please forgive me.

Doesn't Photoshop 5.0 come with ImageReady 1.0 to do animations?
PS 5.5 comes with IR 2.0.
PS 6 comes with IR 3.
PS 7 comes with IR 7.
PS CS/8 comes with IR CS/8.

DavidR-XV In reply to mick-mick [2004-07-25 02:40:32 +0000 UTC]

yep there's the problem. . .I go to File. . and there is no Image Ready.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mick-mick In reply to DavidR-XV [2004-07-25 16:07:25 +0000 UTC]

Did you look in the photoshop instillation folder for the imageready.exe?
Do you still have the installation CD and manual?
Did you try to look at the help file through the program?

In 7 and CS its:
File - > Edit in ImageReady
Or you could click the link on the tool bar to send the image to ImageReady.

Mmmmyyyyyyahyahyahyah I was doing this already! (only my avatar came out like 1 kb over quota :\ )

But yeah, awesome tutorial... I've written a couple myself, and I know what a bitch it can be to get all the screenshots, crop, resize, format text, and bla bla bla bla.... Good job, and on behalf of t3h community, I thank thee!

1 kb is easy to overcome.
Did you play with the optimise settings?
Try a border if you dont have one. It will reduce the end filesize.

Hmm... Do we all have the gears on our computers no matter what if we have photoshop? I did make something with this. Although, I changed the steps a big and sort of fucked up. But I couldn't find the toothed_wheels ..

Excellent tutorial man. I definitely learned some things.

mick-mick In reply to njp [2004-07-01 03:53:02 +0000 UTC]

There is a link to Adobe Studio Exchange right at the top of the tutorial.
A link to where I got the shapes I used.

No images in comments.. you are correct.
I tried the direct link and got this..

"Not Found
The requested URL /albums /v280/nickjp/other/wheel.gif was not found on this server.

Apache/1.3.29 Server at [link] Port 80"

.. I'm not so observant. Thanks.

And deviantART is putting a space in between "album" and "/"

One more try: [link]

mick-mick In reply to njp [2004-07-01 04:15:56 +0000 UTC]

A good start.
It does need some work, keep at it.

Try this.. work on a canvas that is 500x500 with a resolution 720.
After you do all the alignment and have the file ready to animate, just before you animate, set the resolution to 72 and the image will shrink to 50x50 and maintain proportion. Then you can jump into imageready and make new frames, turn on and off layers to get the animation. I find this approach works well when dealing with shapes. It is a good technique but it doesn't work for everything.

I worded that oddly. Big = bit*.

And apparently I can't put images in comments.

Isn't flash for animation?
It takes a long time to make things like this in photoshop&imageready, while I can make it in flash in no second.

Anyway, great tutorial.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mick-mick In reply to Mas-D [2004-04-29 02:52:46 +0000 UTC]

Yeah for Flash.

There are quite a few animation programs.
I could only afford one when I was shopping and Photoshop gave me the best all around options.
My next purchase will be StudioMX so I can have Flash to animate with while also getting Dreamweaver and Fireworks.

Thank you.
