You just mark the box next to "Preserve Opacity", .. but it may have a different term if you have a different version though... Here's a screen shot:

Wow, this is an incredible tutorial. One of the best I've seen. I'm horrible when it comes to lighting and shading and I found a lot of great tips in here. Thanks a lot! Can't wait to put this tutorial to good use.

The next time I would try something different, doing all he shadows in black and white adding the color just at the end with multiply levels, that could lead to intersting results. Xd

Hmm, for that I think Overlay layer mode is better than Multiply, because it will not make your desired color into a darker shade, unlike what Multiply do.. You should try it!
