Description R.P.G. (Ransack People's Gold) is the tale of four D&D/Star Wars/RPG players and their DM, who wishes he were a player. These intrepid players are, from left to right:
Kenneth, the over-achieving, yet under appreciated DM.
Adam, the guy who has a theater background but needs a girlfriend.
Barry, the munchkin power-gamer with a bad case of arrested development.
Josh, the straight-laced guy who just wants to play the game.
Kassi, Josh's homicidally-minded younger cousin, whom he regrets inviting.

This actually started as a joke in my family when The Dark Queen of Krynn came out from SSI. We all found the cursed belt of gender changing. Then we found another one in an old AD&D first edition module we played. I think we found another one somewhere else but it is a classic Gygaxian revenge treasure. I've never given one out in play but my stories did inspire a couple of new DMs to do it to each other in turn. In that way I'm keeping the tradition alive.

The Dark Queen of Krynn,...as in Takisis (probably spelled wrong XD) from dragonlance?

The very same. It is really the only thing we ever did with Dragonlance since our home game was in a homebrew world that borrowed even more heavily from Tolkien and most of the DND games that came out after that were Dark Sun or Forgotten Realms.

I'm all about spreading this once ubiquitous item to as many new campaigns as possible.

Nice, in fact, that'll be the ONLY magic item-other than +1 long swords -I'll willingly give out.

Now I have to name a magic item that kills the user after you

Sadly, the Deck of Many Things is too well known (You drew what card? Cool, your soul is now imprisoned in a pocket dimension while your body slowly dies). I could go with a Sphere of Annihilation being renamed a Sphere of Brianihliation.

nobody I play with knows of it, they don't have any 3rd core rulebooks, or any at all

Those things are best known to 1st and 2nd Edition players, they did make it back into 3rd at some point but not in core books.

Oh, well the people I play with probably don't know that 1st or second edition exist, and I remember seeing it in the DM's guide for 3rd edition

Most well known items from 1st and 2nd have analogues in 3rd and 4th but they are really only known to those who recognize them from older editions.

I wonder if they were to be thrown in to a campain where they can't use magic items, whould they still be able to munchkin? My GM keeps us guarding an living artifact weapon thing hidden under our temple that makes magic items and magic to run havoc and be fatal to any character carrying any with them. Makes game rather interesting. Thou we are all divine classes so we can still manage the deal.

Easily. Certain magic items are only necessary for certain builds. More than half of my munchkin builds would do just fine with inherent bonuses (because enhancement bonuses are factored into monster defenses and hit points) in place of magic items.

Sounds like a rather vindictive thing to do. I guess it's something to do when your gamers are being pricks and not letting you finish your set up.

In the old days that was implicitly how you determined (without the proper spell) what an item was. Now only DMs who use this particular item do this.

When Tive's character gets that belt, I'm repeating the bra-search episode on him, this time with a character who fits it. And if that makes him--excuse me, her mess with Pirkitta's hair, I'll just have to slide him into a sticky enemy and not heal him. *evil grin*

I think there is one big cat fight brewing.

Followed up by "Bards: Oh hell, you're just the wizard--I don't need you, go ahead and die. Makes the story more interesting anyway, isn't that what you wanted?"

That depends on how he decides to handle my bra-shopping excursion. If he handles it at least as well as Wes did, I'll have no (additional) reason to kill him.

I was within an inch of murdering his character for that "'nam flashback" thing where he nearly shot my Avenger in the back. And I'm not kidding. When I run a mean character I will literally kill any fellow PC whom I cannot trust. I've done it more than once before.

I would not complain if you did. He can say I'm just "taking it too seriously," but I'll admit it--dick with me in a game and I will kick you in the nuts in person. If he can't get that through his head, one of us probably will kill him. Your character for his untrustworthiness, mine for her own hair.

Lol it happened to my female monk in the second campain I ever played. The psion (our party leader) made her ty it on since we couldn't identify it. It was the begining of a hate hate relationship between the two that ended when he turned her insane >_< heh.

mindflenzing In reply to Imaginingangels [2009-10-13 22:50:31 +0000 UTC]

Really? I've never seen it happen to a female character or player before. I imagine it is not quite the same as when a guy (who is allergic to cross-playing) gets one. You gotta love when a-hole characters drive each other up the walls. In my groups, if there is one annoying guy his character generally dies, this often simply results from me simply revoking his plot immunity and waiting for him to do something stupid. That reminds me, I should do one based on the Deadlands character who set a forest on fire during a fight and got his throat ripped out trying to abandon the party to their fate.
