Have you ever tried using only foil and no wire? I have a dragon figure I was working on that has only foil inside and no wire, I'm wondering if I should scrap it

It depends, if the sculpture doesn't have appendages or anything that needs real support it would work just fine. Things like arms/legs/tail/long necks, definitely need the added support of wire to stand. If you're just doing a head or something that is mainly one mass, it should work just fine!

Its a whole body with appendages and all I'm going to scrap it and use the foil body I built for a dragon laying down and curled up. I really appreciate the advice, and spamming your posts with comments haha

good call! Sculpey has a tendency to crack when baked if not properly supported. You should try a neck/head bust (maybe even include some chest area)! Really go crazy with it. I'm planning a dragon like that myself. I'm always down to talk sculpting. Feel free to email me with any questions too! jacobcorricksculpture@gmail.com

Very cool! Can't wait to see what you do with it. like i said, the sculpey original rocks for bases. I use floral wire for my armatures, it's very inexpensive and easy to find. Super glue to hold everything down to a wooden base. easy!

any certain gauge wire I should get? Or does all floral wire come as one type

there are a couple different ones. I normally go with the thickest (20 gauge or bigger is usually good) Always wrap your wire with another piece! It helps the clay stick. and you can bulk out your sculpture with tin foil to save clay too

When you use tin foil do you put masking tape over it as well? I have seen some people do that on youtube videos and I was wondering if that helps it stick to the foil

I've personally never done that. I've used tape for armature bulk when working in WED clay, but never with Sculpey. I would be worried about it in the oven. I just wrap the tin foil around the wire and squeeze it tight. It really helps save Sculpey.
