If you know the 1980s episode of Transformers The Girl Who Loved Powerglide, then you recognize this pair. This was one of the few episodes I remembered from the series before I started collecting the episodes on DVD. I just think it’s cool that two totally different beings could have a romance but I was disappointed that the series never revisited this particular couple. If you never saw the episode here’s what happens:

Powerglide saves the rich heiress and CEO Astoria Carlton-Ritz from Dirge, Thrust and Ramjet who are after a formula she possess. Powerglide initially dislikes the spoiled rich girl, as her uncanny ability to mess up anything mechanical or electronic nearly kills them. During the ensuing attempts by the Decepticons to kidnap her, Powerglide begins to like Astoria. Unable to keep her from her kidnapper’s clutches, Powerglide is helpless to stop the trio from taking her to their floating air base and an attempted interrogation by Megatron. Powerglide sets off to rescue Astoria, but the Decepticons newest weapon creates an energy storm that threatens to destroy him. Seeing his plight on a monitor, the captured Astoria flings her locket (containing the formula Megatron was after) into the weapon’s controls causing it to go haywire. In the chaos Powerglide manages to rescue Astoria and redirect the crashing base into the Decepticons ground base. In the end Astoria kisses Powerglide and after she leaves Powerglide opens his chest revealing a heart-shaped light display pulsing across his inner chest circuits.

I always wanted to see the unlikely star-crossed pair going on another date so I decided to draw them on a beach at sunset gazing at each other. I used traditional pencil, with pen and brush ink. When I get time I might color it.
