Quite possibly one of my favorite villain deaths was Death Stalker’s demise in Daredevil 158. This issue was also the start of Frank Miller’s legendary run on the title that would reinvent the failing comic into a best-selling gritty neo-noir and inspired Eastman and Laird’s creation of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
It was kind of difficult to map out the cemetery at first because the details changed from panel to panel in the original comic drastically in some spots or it was intentionally vague. I don’t blame Miller for this since it was his first book and he was finishing up a story that had been drawn by Gene Colon for the last few issues so he probably rushed to get the art done on time.
I had to start with the final panel that laid out where the victims ended up and worked my way backwards in the comic to map out how this section of the graveyard should look as a single scene and I’m pretty happy with the results.
With the exception of the tombstone Death Stalked made especially for Daredevil all the other stones were blank or very basic so I detailed them as much as possible, added in a few cemetery candles and used Death Stalker’s gloves as the main light source since the final part of their battle took place in near pitch blackness.
In the comic they also switch the view from Death Stalker to Daredevil reacting in horror to the villain materializing inside the giant Celtic Cross tombstone he was leaping through to grab DD with his touch of death.
Because of Daredevil’s horrified reaction (and a conversation I had with my friend Sassy about his cause of death) I decided to try and show what Daredevil “saw” and have the mass of the granite fusing with Death Stalker’s body displace his blood violently from his body.
For Daredevil I went with kind of a hybrid of his original comic suit and the TV show one to make it look like flexible but tough leather and Kevlar panels designed to protect him.
For Cat Man and Ape Man’s corpses I stuck with the Marvel Handbook and Gene Colon’s designs rather than Miller’s because their costumes kept changing from panel to panel including making them both look like they were wearing nothing but belly shirts.
Finally, with Death Stalker I went with Miller’s art and tried to make it a bit more realistic. I also made the hair a bit longer and more Victorian since that was kind of the motif the villain used. Also due to his situation I didn’t see him going out for haircuts much.
