You all voted for Super Mario Bros 2 as the next Classic NES art piece and here it is.

As with the first Super Mario Bros piece I wanted to do it in sort of a more realistic style as if it were a live action movie or redone like Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

So since Subcon is a literal dream dimension that Mario and his friends were sucked into I wanted to make the final boss level look sort of surreal and dream like so I used the original end level as reference and make it look polished and magical with sparkles all around as if it were a perfect dream version of what a dream machine and it’s housing would look like.

But at the same time I wanted to make it look as if Wart’s presence is corrupting it and warping it with his influence so I put in way more of the trippy bubbles he’s belching out to show that as well as distort the vegetables faces to look evil and demonic.

For Wart I decided to go with Stephen King’s It as a basis since he just looks like a sort of cutesy fat frog/toad/dinosaur thing in the original sprite. So I made him more warped and evil as if his true demonic dream demon nature is finally being revealed.

Since the game was the first in the series where you could play as four different characters I wanted to have them all present in the final battle teaming up against Wart and trying to choke him to death with the vegetables that fly out of the dream machine.

Since Princess Peach can float in the game I have her floating up behind Wart and strangling him with his own necklace so he opens wide for the nightmare veggies the others are catching and throwing down his gullet.

For Mario and Luigi I went for more of a realistic look for them but as with the previous Mario art I wanted to make him seem a bit scruffier and sporting stubble in contrast to Luigi being taller and clean shaven.

For Toad I used a baby’s body for the proportions sine he’s always portrayed as small, round and chubby but I gave him jacked arms since he’s also shown to be incredibly strong for his size.

I also wanted to play up the inhuman features of Toad’s face and so I tried to make it look more alien, especially the eyes and I mottled his skin so he kind of looks like a literal fungus/mushroom person.
