Description A little while ago I asked myself: what if Texas were still an independent country as it was over 150 years ago? Since I'm a collector of currency, particularly banknotes, I wondered what its currency may look like if the Republic of Texas was still a sovereign nation. Thus began Project Lone Star.

Phase 1 of this project was designing the face of the Texas $1 bill. I was trying to create a note unlike current United States currency, but at the same time incorporating some of its features. As far as I know this is not illegal or infringing on any copyrights, because this is a theoretical design of currency for a now-defunct nation.

This would be a Series 2008 $1 banknote for the Republic of Texas, with the signatures of Rick Perry (the current governor of the state of Texas) as president and Carole Keeton Rylander as the comptroller (our equivalent of a treasurer). The depicted figure is Sam Houston, first president of the Republic of Texas.

The diamond pattern in the back of the design is a reference to, but not a match of, the patterns found on United States next-gen notes, and like those notes, the pattern would be applied via offset printing. I will admit that the "ONE" text with the red seal over it is a direct reference to United States currency but because the seal has its year removed (look closely) and because the entire overprint is in red, it is unlike the Federal Reserve Note overprints of today. Some people may recognize the serial number, 31415927, as the digits of pi. The A and Z were stuck on the serial in United States style, and would be read in a similar way. The black A with the circle around it was my attempt to recreate the district designator stamp on a U.S $1 note. (The Republic of Texas would have four Central Bank locations, much like Federal Reserve Banks in the United States: A = San Antonio, B = Dallas, C = Amarillo, D = El Paso.)

I don't know if I'll find time in the future to complete Phase 2, which would be the back of this same denomination. I just wanted to get this submitted and see what people thought of my currency-designing skills.

REMEMBER, I AM NOT TRYING TO COUNTERFEIT ANYTHING HERE. THIS WOULD NOT BE LEGAL TENDER BECAUSE IT IS A DESIGN OF A SERIES OF MONEY THE REPUBLIC OF TEXAS DID NOT PRODUCE.

Alot of people who design fictional currencies feel the need to add counterfeiting disclaimers. Lol

Well, the Giori-press test notes from the 1970's were designed with cancellation bars over the portraits to deter people from trying to spend them as legal tender, despite the fact the test notes were never intended to be released to the public, and that the test notes weren't very close in appearance to any denomination in circulation at that time.

Still, seems a tad unneeded.

Too bad Grace Park isn't from Texas.
We could have her on our currency.

So it seems.

But truth be told, I've largely abandoned this project, partly because I couldn't find suitable intaglio images of certain people, but also because I'm not as passionate about numismatics as I once was.

It's a very original, and well thought out piece of work.
They should have hired you to design the paper money for FIREFLY.

Would you believe I'd actually gotten contacted by the micronation republic of Renasia for commission information? I ultimately decided to turn it down only because I questioned the legality of designing high-resolution banknotes for a real-world entity, even if it was only a micronation.

I'm surprised that gentlemen in a black van haven't invited you to come work for the socialist paradise of North Korea.

Wow, this is pretty interesting. nice design and everything. So if this is a $1 bill for Texas..what would a 5 look like?

As a reminder, this is my own design, and is definitely not the design of currency that's floating around Texas right now.

As for the $5, maybe I'll put Stephen F. Austin on there or something. I was lucky to find that engraved image of Sam Houston to put on this note, otherwise it wouldn't look as much like a banknote.

lol cool. And yeah I know it's your own design. I was just curious as to what you'd put for a 5.
