Love your gallery. You always have the best models, perfect lighting, and great taste in photography. I expect many more works from you this upcoming year. You're my fav photographer on DA! ^_^

How much post-processing did you do on this?

I love it; I'm just curious how hard you had to work to get the shadow that perfect on her ass.

mjranum In reply to taomi [2007-12-29 17:03:15 +0000 UTC]

I did hardly any post-work other than b/w conversion.

The light on her backside is just the way it landed - the lighting for this was an overhead pan softbox on a boom-arm (my Xmas presents for myself!) it makes a nice little pool of soft light. The shot wouldn't work if Candace's curves weren't very well-graded.

I'm definitely going to have to draw something based on this...both the subject matter and the lighting. Both are beautiful, but this one has a greater air of mystery that I adore.

I need this. I need to paint this. Is their a color proof I can see? Would you mind? This b&w piece would look good in my living room, but I need to paint this in color badly.

Email me (mjr@ranum.com) and I'll send you the full color version. BTW it doesn't look much different; because of how it's lit.

Surprisingly good considering. I bought a Macbook(best decision after marrying my wife!) Last time we wrote, I think I was still trying to move to Seoul? Well, after an interview from hell and the sad realization that Seoul is the 5th most expensive city in the world, that fell through. I did manage to change schools and now have a job I like, LOADS of free time for art(my supplies just shipped in from home!), and about 6 weeks of vacation time to travel.

OH! speaking of art and travel, I was just offered a show in Belgium. I wanted to talk to you about using some of your stock. What would you need from me in exchange considering the final pieces are for sale? Would you even be open to it? If you remember I only paint traditional with no digital manipulation, so your stock would be for reference. I plan to marry my figure drawing style(the colors) with my portrait technique and am enthusiastic of the result.

Also, my offer to host you in Korea still stands. I am meeting plenty of super-attractive Korean women we might be able to line up for a shoot, and I live in a very nice area with plenty to see, and lots of beautiful(and photogenic) landscape. Just a trip to relax might be worth it. You know as well as I do the things you do/see while traveling far outweigh the costs. Its just money, right? Besides, you also get the benefit of traditional Isan Thai cooking!

lol Sorry for the lengthy reply, I know you are even busier than I!

A hand-written thank you note. That's all.

I'd love to do a Korea trip. Seriously. Right now it's not feasible but maybe next year. I just don't know.

vessel2000 In reply to mjranum [2008-09-20 16:01:42 +0000 UTC]

Seriously? Thanks!

You still have my email? Make sure you send me your snail-mail address. I'll try to do better than just a note. I really appreciate this.

As far as the trip, we have plenty of room for you, but hotels are notoriously cheap, I've seen suites for as low as $55-60/night. Regular rooms go for $35-45. I should be working in Korea until at least August 2009, and if nothing changes too much, I see another year at least beyond that. I know I have all of February off, so that is when I am planning my Belgium show and trip, but I should be here the rest of the year. If they give me the end of January too, then I might try to make a trip to Thailand, but I am not sure. That leaves plenty of time for you to visit, and if you can stand to bunk down here, the only money you will need beyond airfare is what you want to buy for memories...

but that's what the camera's for, right?

Time to raid your stock gallery! I will note you which ones I use and email you a preview of the final piece. I was planning on crediting you as photos for reference, but do you think we need any kind of contract or signed agreement? I was going to write something like; "... photograph referenced copyright Marcus J Ranum used with permission..."

I gotta stop writing these novels...
