Description
The 2040's was a crucial period for humanity. Several leaps in technology were achieved at the time. A cure for most cancer types, genetic engineering, cold fusion, 3d printed food, quantum computing and of course an artificial intelligence achieving sentience. But also a new wave of space exploration was happening. Dozens of moon bases, several large space stations and even a Mars colony was put in use.
The following decades saw the construcion of the first megastructures. 2 O'neil cylinders were put in orbit, one around the Earth, another around Mars. But a third one was still under construction.
This colossal structure was designed not just as a space habitat but as a self-contained generation ship, capable of sustaining human life for the long journey to a habitable planet located 10 light-years away.
It had an 890 meter radius and a 10 kilometer length, designed to simulate Earth's gravity by rotating exactly once per minute. The construction process took place in orbit around Earth.
The assembly began with the creation of a structural framework that served as the backbone of the cylinder. The outer shell housed the radiation shield, fusion reactors, maintenance and storage facilities.
The inner shell was the living area where people lived alongside a man-made ecosystem. Living quarters, agricultural zones, recrational spaces and wildlife reserves.
The center of the cylinder was a simulated sun, a light and heat emmitting rod running the entire lenght of the cylinder.
The cylinder was designed to accommodate a starter population of 5000 individuals. These inhabitants were selected through a rigorous process, considering a diverse range of skills, expertise, and genetic diversity to ensure the sustainability of the community during the long voyage.
By the time the construction was finished in 2072 the people on Earth were struggling to keep their independence from the A.I. And so this project was seen as their only hope of escape.
The ship was stacked with supplies, people, and a lot of ambition. Then it was sent on a 50 year voyage to the nearest habitable planet.
