Updates Log26.09.12 ->
These are added on at the end of the tutorial. Though you may want to check that you have the AVC(264) Codec first as the reason why if you still get the “Cannot Open AVI File” may be down to missing that particular codec from your system.
> Error solution upon converting problem
> Included a link to the AVC(264) codec (Still “Cannot open AVI file” solution [?])*
*This should be the solution, due to the fact that if a particular codec is missing from your system some things will not work.

(Will work on all WindowsOS, which is what MMD runs on. And yes. That includes Vista as well)
Hope this helps.

Got any advice for when it freezes at the first frame? I tried to render it to avi, but when it finishes, the video only shows the first frame, but still plays the music. Do you know how to fix this?

I do not believe that there is a way to change the actual ‘size’ of the video when it is loaded into the background in MMD – as MMD stretches the video and/or picture that is loaded into the background.
However, what you can do to make the video ‘smaller’ is to download a screen accessory ( [link] ) separately and load it into MMD and get the video to show on it instead.
This way you can change the size of the screen/video and also move the screen around with the Dummy bone if you ‘attach’ the screen to it through the accessory tab.
In order to make the video show on the screen (all of this is located under the “Background” section in MMD);
1) Load your AVI in the background
2) Then go to the Capture Screen Mode and pick “ON.mode03 (B)” this will make the background file appear on the screen.
3) You should also uncheck the “Show AVI in background” option so that the video will only show on the Capture screen and not in the background as well.
4) From here you can resize the screen’s size and move it around a bit to make seeing the motion in the video easier.
I hope that helps.

This is one great alternative! Thank you so much!
I mean I found out that SHIFT and CTRL keys help, without adding the video to the accessory but to be honest I can't get quite get used to it~

You can always just load the wav in MMD. ^^
Mine has sound when I play it in Media Player, but when I open it in MMD it doesn't have sound - so I just load the wav.

Ummm.....So long as the video loads in the background and you have the wav file it doesn't matter if there's no sound on the video because you get the sound from the wav in MMD. You can still make the motion, sound doesn't matter.

Hmm...a useful tutorial--would've been more useful if I'd found it about three days ago, but that's neither here nor there--but I think there must be additional details that are still unknown about what makes MMD accept an AVI. Because when I was trying to convert a video as a motion guide, I literally went through every single one of Format Factory's versions of AVI, and on every single one of them, including AVC(H264), MMD said it couldn't open the file.
Are there any other settings you changed other than the ones shown above? Maybe one of them is the deciding factor or something. Or maybe it's about the frame rate or bit rate on the finished video? I noticed a lot of options when I was trying to figure out how to force FF to give me an AVI I could use, but there were so many that it was going to take too long to try and experiment with it all. Knowing what the settings/results were on a video that works will be a good first step, I think.

Yes. I know its weird, for some reason mine allows AVC, but others have said that it does not work for them.
I've been thinking that mine could be down to the fact that I CANNOT render MMD Videos that I make in the other codecs EXCEPT for Xvid. Microsoft Video 1, AVI RAW and other 'built in' codecs do not work when I try to render MMD Movies. When rendering with these codecs (for some reason) MMD freezes and crashes. So I can only use Xvid to render my videos with. I also can't play the other formats back when they do decide to render (which is currently never, used to be once in a blue moon but no longer).
I've been trying to ask what codecs people can render to see if this is what the deciding factor is but the replies sound very blunt and curt. Plus I only get one codec name out of the 10 on the list - or how many defaults there are.(Just trying to figure out what is wrong people...its not like i'm sitting next to you and can get it straight away :/ )
All the settings are the same as shown in the tutorial. The only difference that I've found with people using format factory is that they are converting other file formats to .avi when in this tutorial I am converting .avi to .avi :/ which I thought I didn't need to really mention because....you know it says "Load background AVI file". But I can render wma to AVI (AVC) and mpeg to AVI (AVC) and MMD will still open it.
So I don't think its that, unless the original convert from youtube is important. For the video I used in this tutorial I downloaded it as an AVI from MP4. While others have downloaded it as MP4 -> WMA or MP4 to MPEG because of the different interlacing of the formats.
What kind of details do you want? Do you want ALL the details under Details when you go to Properties (Right click on file)?
I'm also going to look at some other converting programs to see if they allow Microsoft Video 1 converts. So the angry mobs will have to wait while I figure this out.

Hmm, it does sound very odd the way it works differently on different people's computers. I bet it has to do with video cards and other things we can't lightly change. I'm not even sure which codecs I can render from MMD in; the last time I tried anything other than raw and Video 1, the quality was so poor that I didn't bother ever trying again. (And that was on my old computer, so it's a completely different ball of wax.)
I had been trying to figure out what was wrong by looking at the videos that work and don't work; the details in the "Details" tab when I look at the Properties on the .avi files. The big differences I was spotting between the ones that work and don't work seemed to be the bit rate and other numerical things that I don't entirely know what they mean. Most of them seemed to have equivalent settings in Format Factory, so I was wondering what setting you used in your successful videos. They probably carry over from the original video to a certain extent (mine was downloaded from a site other than YouTube, so it's a bit different...) so the default values you're using in Format Factory might be different from the default values in mine, if that makes any sense...
My brother has a program on his computer (a $200 program, yikes) that can make videos that work, so this isn't a *huge* deal for me, but it certainly would be a lot less hassle if I could convert videos on at my own place.

Yeah I understand that. My mum has Photo Paintshop Pro 10 (or 11) on her computer and she says I can go on and use it but....I kinda want to use it on my computer where I know where everything is x'DD Its a sweet gesture though.
I think I've actually worked out why it wouldn't work on some computers.
On my Video Compressors section, I have a codec called "X264vfw – H264/MPEG-4 AVC Codec" installed on my computer. In other words the "AVC(H264)" Codec.
So the reason why it might not play in MMD as a background file is because you are missing that codec. (Because Codecs are horrible like that just like Directx9 with PMDeditor - where you need it to work properly.)
You can download that particular codec from here; [link]
So it should just be a case of downloading and installing that codec and then MMD will accept the format (hopefully).
Here are also the details of the original and converted data. But as said before, I didn't change anything in the program when converting it. (There's no other important data after those sections - just what my computer is called and where its stored.)

Converted - [link]

I can't remember if the AVC was one of the ones that would play on my machine or not...I thought it was, but I'll definitely download that codec and see if that was the problem, just in case. (It would certainly be nice if it was something that simple!)
Looks like your bit rate really increased between the original and the converted version. I think mine decreased, so I think I'll also try doing a 30 frame per second version at a much higher bit rate, and see if that helps.

Hmm, file size. I didn't think to check that aspect. It could well be that there's a maximum that MMD will easily accept. (Technically, it *did* load a raw .AVI, but then it crashed the first time I changed the frame, so...obviously the file size there was a problem...)

Okay. I'm going to ask some really weird questions which are not by any means picking at you. Its just I don't know anything about your computer and it would help to know this stuff to try and figure out the problem
1. Is the file name of the file really long or has strange characters (like symbols, exclamation marks in ect) in it?
2. Can you render in all the codecs found in MMD? Or can you only render in one?
3. What did you convert the file from when you turned it into an .avi file?

Izzyotic In reply to mmdyesbutterfly [2012-09-24 18:11:48 +0000 UTC]
1. No, I shorted the name and it doesn't have any strange letters, the file's name is called " MMD dance "
2. I didn't understand that question
3. it was an .wma file

mmdyesbutterfly In reply to Izzyotic [2012-09-24 18:24:08 +0000 UTC]
1. Okay~
2. When you render a video in MMD yourself ( File > Render to AVI file) what codecs can you render in?
I ask this because the method in the tutorial works for me but I can ONLY render with Xvid in MMD.
3. Hmmm....It works for me which is odd.
4. How did you 'get' the video which you want to load in MMD? (e.g downloaded it from youtube).

Izzyotic In reply to mmdyesbutterfly [2012-09-24 20:59:20 +0000 UTC]
2. I render with Microsoft Video 1 like always... and in your tutorial it says that we can also use AVC(H264)
4. I got the video off youtube yes - this one [link]
I converted the video on www.convertfile .com into .wma

mmdyesbutterfly In reply to Izzyotic [2012-09-25 15:13:50 +0000 UTC]
I think I just noticed something on my MMD which might be different.
In your "video compressor" section, where you choose Microsoft Video 1 from, do you have a codec called "x264vfw -H.264/MPEG-4 AVC codec"?
I think that might be the reason why MMD might not be able to load it because THAT is the AVC(H264) codec that's used in this tutorial and if you don't have it that might be the reason why its not working. Its only a guess though.
if its not that I swear I'm going to jump out a plane. you can be the one to push if you like

mmdyesbutterfly In reply to Izzyotic [2012-09-25 16:44:15 +0000 UTC]
The "MPEG-4" part is part of the "x264 [ect]" codec name.
You can download it here: [link] . Try downloading this codec and seeing if loading the converted video in MMD works once its installed.
