Description Updates Log
12th August 2012
Updated tutorial with information on the command windows in PMX; where to find the create physics and joints command and included a quick run down of the tabs in PMX as well.

I hope to be able to get better at using PMX Editor so I can try and do a tutorial where it focuses more on the PMX version of the editor. However, much of the process is the same. PMX users just have the advantage of being able to select the option of making "Static Physics" and/or "Physical Physics" without the need of changing it in the Physics Tab.

I hope that this will help more people, and thank you to the ones who have downloaded and viewed this tutorial. I am glad that it was helpful to you (if it was which I hope it was).

Fixed and corrected title.
Updated Contents Page, now has page numbers.
Added a section on the differences between Static Physics and Physical Physics.

Comments
I decided to make a Physics and Joints tutorial - which focuses more on the joint side due to the fact that many people seem to struggle with them. I actually started this last weekend and just finished it today.

I hope that this is useful to at least someone ^^ . I may add and revamp a few parts later on.

This is also my first tutorial for PMDeditor so....it might be a little bit iffy in places. However, it does require basic knowlege of PMDeditor's controls and where things are. Sorry if it gets a bit wordy. I...kinda had a lot on my mind last week. Hope that this category is okay.

You can download the PDF file over there it should be under add to faves------->

And here is a download to both Miku's model files showing the joints and physics process, along with the pictures used in this tutorial - in case you can't see them; [link]

Extra Note
Oh and until Isay otherwise, my name will always be Butterfly/yesbutterfly. If it says anything else, its a lie. My real name is Gladys. 8|

Program's used

Texture used in preview image is from here; [link]

Credits go to 3DCG, ETO, ~MMDFakewings18 , *HousekineMinto and :Amiamy111:, whose parts that I used in this tutorial. And also to Animasa for their default model which is also used for most of this tutorial.
Please enjoy the crappy tutorial.

Um. Sorry to bother you, but I have seem to run into this problem like other people who seen you tutorial. I seen your advice with one of the complaints, and I have a question. How do I know if there is a "-" in any of the joints ina model. Sorry for my bad grammar if I don't make any since.

AnimeNebula003 In reply to SoraJakeBlade [2016-10-06 16:41:56 +0000 UTC]

My guess is that the reason your model won't open in MMD is probably due to one or multiple of your joints not being connected to a physic. Go through your list and make sure every joint is connected to 2 different physics. If you see a "-" in either of the two drop down menus where you should have physics selected so they are connected to physics that is probably why your model won't open in MMD.

With the latest versions of MMD if even a single joint is not connected to a physic it will crash MMD, however, you can still open the model in PMD/PMX editor.

Yo.
From your plee it sounds like you just wana make Static Phsyx for bones like an arm or leg. If thats true then I'll try to guide you as blind as it might be. And please excuse the literal step by step. Just dont ask for Joint help. Im still figuring out that little Pandora's Box.

(Note: This is a guide from "PMX v0137e" if you have a different version then its generally the same steps but it might be off a tab or 2)
1) In your Model window (The window with the actual model) Highlight whatever bones you want phsyx for (Im going to assume you already know how to do that)
2) In the same window go to the tabs and click the second tab (E) (the first is grayed out)
3) Go to the 10th selection (B)
4) Inside there go to the 10th selection (B) and click "OK" when prompted
Note: Alternately for steps 2-4 you can press "Alt, E, B, B"
This makes a Static Phsyx on all bones selected (Static Phsyx are things like walls or limbs. The Cause not the Action.)
So far this might be fine for some but turn on Phsyx view (8th/9th selection on the bottom of the Model Window) and the Phsyx might be to thick or thin or even the wrong shape.
To tweak the Phsyx:
5) Go to the Value Window (The window where you dont see your model) and pick the 8th tab (Just left of the "Joint" tab)
6) Select the Phsyx you want to tweak. By doing steps 1-4 the Phsyx should be alredy named the same as its bone and you can see the part selected
7a) The middle group effects its Size, Location, and Rotation respectively.
7b) To the Left theirs 1 of 3 selections. This is the shape Spear, Box, and Cylinder.
7c) Above theirs another 1 of 3 selection Static, Jiggle, and "Follow Bone" (No idea what it dose)
7d) Above THAT to the top right is what bone the Phsyx follows.
8) Adjust any/all/none until content
9) ???
10) Profet
Alternately you can select and move but not resize the Phsyx directly in the Model Window while having the "Phsyx Selection" on (Top of the window just right of the Bone Selection)
NOTE: Im assuming you already know but if you move a bone, the Phsyx wont follow/stretch to its new placement. Keep this in mind when moveing bones

2 years a late reply... Has it bin that long since I went on this? I can only hope you already figured this out but to any others with this problem I hope this helps.
If your model wont open/crashes in MMD (The actual program where you would make animations in) then you might have a lose "Joint". If there is a Joint that does not have a proper Parent/Child then it can crash in MMD.

I am going to assume you have Joints already on your model as this is the common way (to my knowledge) that a model will not open.
-Before any of this, open PMX and in the Value Window and go into the "File" tab. (The same place where you would save your model)
-pick the very bottom selection. (It should say "PMX *something in japanese* F")
 (Alternately: Press Alt, F, F)
- It should open a window that has a bunch of Japanese text. This is a Error Report and tells you any problems or redundancies with your model like repeating, missing, or incorrect values and locations. Bottom right box "OK" closes that window. Bottom left box "Something Japanese" refreshes the window.
-Scroll to the very bottom until you see "Joint"
-If you see "× Bad!" then look below it and find numbers in round brackets.
-These are the joints with problems.

1) In PMX on the Model window, activate the Joint Selection (From the top left it is the 5th selection. Looks like a "J")
Alternately, Activate Joint view (From the bottom left its the 10th selection Looks like a yellow cube)
2) activate Phsyx Selection (Top left, 4th selection)
This will let you see where the joints and Phsyx collision is and help visually with knowing where to connect them
3) in the Value Window go to the "Joint" tab. (9th tab. Literately says "Joint")
-Right below the tab there are 2 boxes that has ("something japanese" A) and ("Something Japanese" B) These are the Parent and Child boxes that target your Phsyx on the model. If any of these are blank it will crash your model when you open it in MMD.
4) Go through each Joint and find any Parent/Child selections that are blank. (If you opend the Error Report above then you should know what Joints are causing errors)
5) In "A" select the Parent Phsyx and in "B" select the Child Phsyx.
Think of it like holding a Yo-Yo, your fingers are the Parent and the end of the Yo-Yo is the Child.
-Side Note: Your Joint location should be as close to "A"'s bone as possible or else the actual pivot point will look wrong.
-Another Note: Remember to have the first Phsyx of a chain as a Static Phsyx or else it will drop when you open it in MMD.
- So if you look at your arm it would be
Joint1: A-Static_Shoulder     B-Dynamic_Elbow
Joint2: A-Dynamic_Elbow     B-Dynamic_Hand

for those having a hard time finding the part where you go edit > bone > create physic/joint in PMX editor because of all the darn japanese tat you cant read, go to edit (E), then to bone (B), and then when it gives you the drop list with aaall the confusing extra things PMD doesnt have, look for (P) and (J). pretty much in the same locations as in PMD is turns out x'D herp derp even i derped and couldnt find it until i tested those ones out and found out that those were the right ones all along :'D

Fantastic tutorial! When I have a problem, I always find myself coming here eventually. However, one thing I never understood how to do is how to give certain objects with physics their own "weight." I don't mean "weighting" as it relates to rigging, however. I mean, how do I make a leather strip behave with more weight than, say, hair?

I don't know if you'll update this ever again or if you already know this, but the last command when you are creating physics and joints in both the newest PMD/PMX editor the last option is actually a super easy way to make physics and joints on bones. Just select all the bones you want moving physics on and click it then go into the joints and connect the first one to the head and maybe change the group colour and it's done. It takes away having to manually make physics then making joints and connecting them to said physics.

PhantomPhan14 [2013-08-15 05:30:40 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I apologize. I should have looked harder at them. I had double physics occupying the same location. No wonder they were acting weird.

But again, very helpful tutorial. I'm saving it for the next time I muck around with physics.

PhantomPhan14 [2013-08-15 05:16:52 +0000 UTC]

Your tutorial is very helpful but doesn't seem to cover a problem I am having. I changed some physical physics in a coat to static ones and yet they still move. Some physics in the coat started as static and those don't move at all. It's only the ones that I changed to static that still act physical. The physics tab says they are static - group 1, just like the others, but strangely their outline is orange instead of green.
