I'm glad you found it helpful! and oh that's too bad! D: I'm not sure if I can help you, it's been years since I've used GIMP! Is there a brush setting called "Fade" that you can meddle with? It'll make your brush strokes taper off to a nice soft end.

But, I do know of a couple good mouse tutorials, here and here ! Hopefully that helps somewhat!

You've got the general idea yeah! you could use a bit more highlights (lighter, edging near white) though on the outer edges of the hair to match the strong lighting from the sunset and the lighting you have on the horse! But in general you did really well! I won't be able to host a join.me for the next couple days but I might host a big scheduled tutorial join me or something about mane and tail painting so many people can come at once in the next week or so?? Sorry I can't be of more help to you right now! :c

I paint my hair using a tablet, which allows me to control how bold a line will be depending on the pressure I exert on the tablet(just like putting more or less pressure on a pencil on paper to make thicker or thinner lines). Out of experience, tablets allow an easier time with flowing strands just because you're more in control with your hand and you'e not drawing with a mouse (and if you have as much trouble as me, it's close to impossible to really make a smooth, curvy line, especially since I'm left handed. But there are many who are talented at it!).

If you have a tablet, I would suggest looking at your pen pressure settings (I know that PSE 8 has limited pen pressure settings). I do know though, that if your tablet isn't showing any pen pressure sensitivty at all, there is something wrong with it as the tablet should be responding to how much you press on the pen (that's the main advantage to tablets - it's as though you're drawing on paper).

If you don't have a tablet / can't get a tablet (which is completely understandable), I would suggest looking around at your brush settings because I'm sure there's an option to increase the "Fade" - in PSE 8, my brush settings are near the top of the screen on the same toolbar that shows my brush size, brush opacity, my brush, etc. It's a paintbrush that I click that releases a drop down menu of sliders that can make me play with "Fade", "Hue Jitter", etc. When using a mouse, setting your brush to fade will make the ink slowly taper out, so you'll have to do strokes one after the other, but it allows you to achieve that fade out look. c:

I do use a tablet,I have a Wacom Bamboo Create. It seems as though the pen pressure works,but I press down hard while using my tablet,but not on paper,so it's a bit tricky,haha.

Would you mind showing me some screen shots of the 'Fade" brush settings?

Well in that case I would just say to work on loosening up your hand, you don't have to press super hard to get a nice solid line - and it's definitely not a bad thing for hair painting, because having very bold hair doesn't always work. c: I personally prefer creating the "fade" at the end of a strand by gradually releasing my pressure (fast, wispy strokes), but nonetheless! here's the fade brush settings in Photoshop Elements 8.0 !

Eep, sorry for the really bad circle. That was done with a mouse haha! The higher the slider goes, the longer it takes for the stroke to fade. The lower it is, the faster it fades out (so as you can see, the shorter strokes were set at a low fade level, and the very long one was a high fade level. The first one was without fade). I hope this helped!!
