We’re doing Flight Animation at University right now! This is my attempt at a bat in mid-flight. I noticed in the middle of the process that bats are propably the most difficult subject to pick for flight animation, since their wings are the most versitile of any flying creatures on earth because of their unique hand-like properties. Like, birds for example have the same bone structure, but the joints aren’t as flexible as a bat’s.Related content

That was the hardest part, because every finer of the wings, and sometimes even every joint, moves on a different arc, and they overlap at some points, and then the skin... aaaaaaaa

I suppose it is! Though bat wings are tiny, that’s why they move quicker, and i’m not sure if just slowing down the motion would do the trick. Will still have to look at dragons from movies for reference.

Jokes aside, this looks great! It has a very stylized look and feel to it being very bouncy, plus I get a 90s Disney-like vibe from it. If you were to show me this and say it was pencil test from a cut Disney movie, I would believe it!

Yeah, there’s so much overlap with how the wings fold when they get pulled up, and the seperate arcs for every joint...

My mistake was I thought yeh I can just modify a hand rig for it.
The finger bits actually worked fine for what I was doing (dragon wings rather than bat) but I'm really, really not looking forward to messing around with the membrane folds XD

That’s really important actually. If some elements of a character move and others don’t, it looks wonky because that doesnt happen in real life
