Description
The white-black furls and glowing fringe
Of all this curling writ, its flickerings unhinge
the gilded teeth of history are turned to ash.
The heat sears dreams and tales. The maw
Chews up the precious scroll, that never saw
A reader's holy gaze. Such is the toll.
Briefly, painted angels glow upon the night
The soot is more than libraries could hope to be
Lineages hush. The dark age is turned bright.
Crests of kings and seals of serfs hiss on the stones
And flake off in the dragonβs breath with ease.
Tomes shuffle in the zealous whisper breeze.
The quires of cathedrals singe. The test
of time is failed, and the emporium scratched out.
The diocese, a yellowed palimpsest, forgot,
Thrown to the crematorium to feed. Their home,
Their rest, was not to be eternal after all.
And all unfolds within the fractal heat.

Finally a breath of air. Way too much has happened since last time, but I was everything but inactive. Just not able to finish things. This picture here depicts 's Seramore, one of two dragon . . . well, I call them entities. Synderen was one of two enormously supportive artists, the other being konkenorve.tumblr.com/ , to whom I first talked to around the end of last year. I wanted to show my gratitude and gain some exposure through art gifts. I promised I would paint this thing in particular in February . . . Well, stuff happened. Plus, I struggled with the composition.
The problem in this case was that I had to clean up too much (Total paint time: 86h35m - 30 of which I put in over the last 3 days or so). Everything but the letters is on one layer and gradually evolved through overpainting. I might make a journal that also explains the background of the piece, as well as my current view of medievalism.
Suffice to say for now that it heavily references illuminated manuscripts and decorated initial letters. The composition in itself is a decorated letter / word. The title refers to a parchment that contains traces of a former document (which was erased and overwritten). It's a term also used in architecture (according to Wikipedia at least), and I discovered it in Alan Moore's "Jerusalem", which is informed a lot by how streets and buildings change over time. Homorously, I first came to call the painting that because I was editing it so much. The church is Notre Dame de Paris. I thought, if it's got to be a cathedral, why not that one that actually burned?
Cough cough, I think I forgot a few areas. Well, I can't do it today, but I'll finish it soon.

I mean this was by far the worst of them this year because I made no drawing and just painted on one layer like a savage. But no matter, the response has made it all worthwhile. When I was *this* close to giving up, I imagined the responses I might get. So thank you - you're part of the reason why I can do these. Uploading into a quiet void would be unbearable, and it was, for years.

Oh gosh the work you put into this is simply incredible!!! The effect of the tail forming into the body has to be my favorite part because it shows so much depth and dimension, like smoke rings coming at you. This is just so cool!!!

monosol In reply to SiofraTural [2019-07-17 08:44:15 +0000 UTC]
Aww thanks! I only got the idea for the rings pretty late. Then I noticed that if the body is constantly coming toward the viewer, there's no way the dragon could rest his paw on the ledge below the rose window because his body would push against the tower. But I like that it doesn't make sense, it's magic after all! Haha.

Oh my, you really hit it with the whole Notre Dame incident. It's almost an artified version. You've certainly added a lot of detail, and it shows! Great work.

Ooh, thanks! And yeah, I saw many Notre Dame pictures after it happened, and maybe I was reminded somehow. At the time I felt really compelled to make something but I couldn't find anything meaningful to say.

It's very interesting that incidents such as these are an enormous motivating force for people to create stuff out of it. Particularly when you're into the whole thing such as you and your love for cathedrals, haha.

I was terrified! I mean there's tons of important ones. Knowing what usually happens in history when a church burns, I'm glad they were able to minimize the damage. I think it was mostly because of its fame that it received such attention, but cathedrals in general exude an air of massive cultural significance, moreso than, say, city halls. Just the way they look . . . I think it's fascinating indeed! Haha.
