Description
EDIT 9/17/09This is uploaded over the other one so that I don't have two marker guides in my gallery. That would be silly.
I'll prolly post the old on on my website so that it's still accessible. I just have to set up a gallery on there.
Um. I don't know if this one looks any better than the other one, but it's certainly more comprehensive and less sleep deprived. I spent a good portion of monday night/tuesday morning coloring until my carpal tunnel kicked in and I had to stop. And compiling this only took two hours.
If there are any questions, or something you'd like me to add a section on. Drop a comment and I can easily edit the photoshop file.
In the fur texture section, there is a lighting change. Because 9AM is brighter than 1AM. The lab/great dane mix is one of my first attempts at actually texturing short fur. Normally I just...don't. eheheh.

It's ok for the late reply. I understand.
And thank you very much for the help on the type of paper to use!

Hey, is it possible to get much work done with only a set of 24 plus some other colors I bought? I have some grays and lighter blues/eggshell/sand type colors in addition to the base 24.
And how would the blending work if you were using, say, bristol board? I have marker paper too, but I'm just wondering.

MorgueMonster In reply to MidnightMoon [2010-05-19 00:16:25 +0000 UTC]
I started on a 24 set and got a lot of really neat pieces. I think you just have to work a little more with blending then and then start lighter to to darker so that you don't accidentally lay down too strong of a color.
Like for example greens and yellows blend great.
I haven't actually tried using bristol board - but I'm interested in trying it. Doesn't it absorb things very well? I should get some and test it :3

Yeah, in my experience it's really really absorbent. It's also durable, which is one reason I had it recommended to me to use.

Actually, that little boy in there is a German Shorthair Pointer.
For some reason his face isn't as floppy as GSP's get so he kinna looks like a dobie in certain lighting.

Prismas were the markers I started off with! I liked them because they were alcohol based. The colors are vibrant and beautiful. Then I started using Copics and I like them alot too! So now I use Copics and Prismas together! But Prisma will always be my first love

I have question! I always use 'dragging' to shade and blend, but how do you do it if the base color(? What your 'True Blue' is in the tutorial) is white? I've tried using the colorless blender with little success.
Halp?
Very nice and helpful tutorial~

MorgueMonster In reply to Yukii21 [2010-02-17 02:24:33 +0000 UTC]
Hmm...
That is an excellent question actually.
I think what I usually do with something like that is use one of the grey 10%'s as my base and just leave the absolutely brightest spots as white. White is tricky, and to my memory I usually just slap on Cool Grey 10% in place of it so that I can still use the technique.
I hope that helps :3
If not, I can do some experimenting for you 83
and thank you for the comment!

Thanks~! I'll get to the craft store sometime and try that~ Follow-up: The '10%' refers to the lightness/darkness? *only has one grey marker* cx

The only thing you didn't mention in this tutorial is what kind of paper you're using. I tried using the NEW TYPE (read: sharpie) Prismacolors on Strathmore recycled sketchpad paper, which is what I used to use them on ten or so years ago. Same paper, but since the manufacturer of the markers changed then how they bleed changed...so my end results were ah, well...ugly and blobby. I have not touched them since because the wet media paper I bought is super-shiny and unkind to my inks, so I can't imagine how it'd be for markers.
So please, what kind of paper are you using? I have a nice big 48 set, and I want to use it and perhaps flesh it out a bit to get more markers for skin and hair tones...but I don't want to use them if I'm just going to get ugly unblendable and blobby colors.

MorgueMonster In reply to anniefelis [2009-10-07 03:19:05 +0000 UTC]
Ah yeah, that would be an important detail.
I definitely think I should add that in here.
I use a basic 80lb cardstock printing paper. It's basic, and what I like about it is that it's not textured but it's still decently thick. But marker does have a habit of bleeding through the back, so it would be important to have something underneath your page.

anniefelis In reply to MorgueMonster [2009-10-07 04:08:53 +0000 UTC]
Thanks for the tip, but I already knew about the bleeding (I learned the hard way eleven or so years ago), and I always stick a few pages of printer paper under what I'm coloring (and sometimes just what I'm inking)....but yes, all the little details matter when you're working with any sort of wet medium.
All right, then that makes more sense to me...so it's a higher weight than your typical textured sketchbook but lower than watercolor paper. I have "wet media" ink paper that's at a weight of 108 lbs, but it's so shiny and smooth that it doesn't absorb inks and markers at the same rate...so I bought some 100 lb bristol today, which should be much better for prismacolor markers as well as the pencils. The great thing about these markers is that they match the pencils, and I have a lovely set of 120 pencils and 24 watercolor pencils that I can use along with them. Maybe you should mention that if you make changes in your tutorials? That as nice as copics are, Prismacolor products match each other regardless of what you use: markers, pencils, pens, watercolor pencils and pastels. They really are a mixed media-user's dream.
