Description One of my first tutorials ever.

It's a quick runthrough of how to use the GIMP for coloring.

The GIMP can be used for short animations, stamps, avatars, and photo/image editing. I might do some of those tutorials later on.

Made on the GIMP 2.6 and MSPaint.

Sorry for the shitty imagery... I am NOOB.

*** I'd like to add that if you want to re-line or ink digitally the lines of your work, the paths tool > selection from path> stroke path works well. Fuzzy select is another way, though not as effective.

When I was in GIMP, I clicked on the pencil and it didn't show the size or anything, even with all the other brushes! D:

If you look on the toolbar where all the tools are located, there should be a square button with a circle on it (a dot, circle, or fuzzy circle). That is the brush button. You can also change the size and opacity of the brush on the toolbar.

Make sure you've got the right layer selected, which would be the background layer, then color to alpha, so only linework becomes visible.

The latest version (Version 2.6) can be found here >>> [link] Updates can be found on gimp.org .

To find out the version you are running, open the Gimp, go to Help> about.

When I went to flatten my layers I could only see one colored section and the rest was white, or sometimes it was just all white. Could you tell me what I did wrong?

Was the "eye" symbol on every layer on your list of colored layers? If not then they were on "hide' or 'invisible" mode.

Otherwise, you must've created a non-transparent layer of white (new layer has two options, transparent or white) over your other layers. When they flattened, the top layer covered the others up.

If it's not either of these but you still have a trouble, you could probably send me the .xcf file for a look-see.

oh, well I just turned everything to multiply and then it showed up but my tree did look a little funny, like you could see all the editing that I did.

heres the pic: [link]

Yeah, the GIMP can be hard to work with at first. I had a lot of issues with it myself a few years back.

Np ^^ I'd hope it helps change how people think of the GIMP.

People shit on the GIMP because they don't understand it.

Oh ho hooo. I always heard Gimp was really hard to work with. I don't know if I could do it >:

Yokko In reply to SkullFuct [2009-10-07 19:17:44 +0000 UTC]

It's actually no harder than any other art program of its caliber. The more you use it, the easier it becomes to figure out.

If you ever find yourself trying to make something with it and you get stuck, send me a message
