Description The icons on the main (host) system are not showing.
The "virtual machine" should be obvious. The VM is a somewhat less capable system, mainly because it doesn't integrate quite as easily with the hardware. In fact, most of the "hardware" of the virtual machine is really software emulation.
My systems are old and the technology has improved considerably. The VMWare workstation I have is v.5.5 while the latest version is 8.
Both the host and guest system are running XP.

Welllll,
It depends on what you want to do.
Developers might use VMs because if the VM crashes, the host system usually won't.
You can run multiple VMs at once on the same host system, and even set up networks between them.
I got the VM for a particular reason - for testing customizing or tweaked versions of Windows itself, which is done before it is installed. Then the installation disk is tested on the VM.
That way if the customized installation fails, it's not a big deal to fix any errors and try again.
I only did this with Windows XP, but there were ways to do pre-install customizations up to Windows 7. I don't pay any attention anymore.
There's a "geek" site - actually packed with folks who really know their stuff, I mean really really - all the way back down into "DOS' operating systems and now up to Windows 8 (betas). (I know there are many windows tweak sites. This is the best one I know of, but it doesn't mean it's the best of all insofar as a large group of very expert folks mixing with general users.
I just followed their directions - as a user of their tools and tricks. I am SO much NOT one of the experts.
My main interest at the site was with this app:

Something like that....
