Description This is my first watercolor that is done entirely in watercolor. I also used a new technique where you lay down all the yellows, then oranges, reds, then greens, then blues, then a "dull" dark mix. It makes it REALLY luminous, so much so that this scan can't possibly show all the brightness.

The piece has its problems, in that the skintones are a little unusual, and the composition could be a lot better, but I'm happy at finally doing a pure transparent watercolor. And I'm really happy with the cat.

If her hair was auburn, it could be a portrait of me, and Sebastian! I adore it!

I understand the issues of that technique quite well! It can be tricky. The skin tones are always the hardest. The finished product is still really great!

I like the tones and contrasts in this beautiful water color painting. The symbolism and vibrant tones add to the magical feeling , and to the mood and expressiveness. I like the flow, the lovely lines and geometrics...it is a wonderful painting.

I have featured this on the newly established Art Bog Deviously Artistic [link]

I think next time I use this technique I will eliminate the orange and the green from the skintone areas. Maybe use warm and cool yellows and reds instead. Maybe just use blue and add purple to the skin shadows.

It's a GOOD technique, I just need to get it fine-tuned to my style and palette.

It does sound like a good way of layering color, though when I paint, my pieces are often not planed out in advance enough to use it.

Ha. The cat is based on one of my cats when he was younger. Oddly enough, right now he's fighting some sort of eye problem, and I'm giving him antibiotic ointment. That's fun.

love the textures, and the glow. you need to use this to make a mermaid, the skin tone would be perfect, and it has the sort of green shimmery light that would be perfect for underwater.

*raises timid hand* salt? how does that work?

ps- you know you want to do some brunettes

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

MPFitzpatrick In reply to magpiesmiscellany [2004-12-31 03:17:19 +0000 UTC]

Ooops. Forgot something.

When you sprinkle salt on wet watercolors it'll dissolve and re-crystalize as it dries. This makes the paint "bloom" with a paler spot or starburst where the salt grain hits it. You can get different effects by using table salt (mild effect) sea salt and different sized grains of salt. Also, how wet or dry the watercolor is when you add the salt can make a difference in the effect. It's great for making textures, tree-leaves in the distance or even snowflakes if done right.

[link]

The above link goes to a page that shows you a bunch of different watercolor effects using salt, alcohol and other techniques.
It's a lot of fun to play with.

Another thing that makes for strange effects is soapy water. Though it's a LOT harder to control than the others.

Actually, I've got a piece in my sketchbook of a merman that I want to do, I just need to get the composition nailed down, but you're absoutely right, this technique would give it just the perfect coloring!

You know, I used to only draw brunettes and redheads. Then I recently figured out how to do blondes. I guess I had a lot of blonde pieces built up in me. I'm pretty sure that the woman in my next piece will be brunette, though. I'm on a fairy-tale roll and I'm working out a Beauty and the Beast pic. And she needs to be brunette so the snow will show up in her hair.

my two pet peeves are that there are (almost) no pudgy women in art, especially fantasy. second being that there are so few non blonde/ redheads. but i'm not a talented enough artist to strike a blow for the plain girl

MPFitzpatrick In reply to magpiesmiscellany [2004-12-31 14:55:44 +0000 UTC]

Heh. I gotten a lot of positive comments on my Macha pic because she's kind of "rounded" and people are really liking that. She's not "pudgy" but she's...ample.

I'm starting to experiment with doing different types of characters that aren't normal fantasy characters, like the Indian woman in the sari in The Naga's Pool. I want to do a couple of black characters, and I'm also considering a pic including a positive rendition of a handicapped fantasy character. Mostly because I've never seen one, and there's no reason for it.

And it's really fun to do new things!

Sea sponges! I love using those! I'm also familiar with salt but I find quite difficult controlling it ...
I haven't tried splattering alcohol yet! I gotta try it someday!
BTW thanks a lot for answering my question!

MPFitzpatrick In reply to syliasyliasylia [2004-12-31 03:22:45 +0000 UTC]

No problem! I've only been playing seriously with the watercolors for a short while, and most of the stuff I've learned about the tricks are off the Web from other people who were kind enough to share. I'm all in favor of an intellectual spreading of the wealth.

MPFitzpatrick In reply to syliasyliasylia [2004-12-31 00:15:07 +0000 UTC]

The background was done in layers, waiting for each to dry before I'd add the next one. The layers were yellow, green, blue and really dark blue. When the green was almost dry I added some tablesalt - I didn't want the big effect that seasalt gives it. Then when the blue was almost dry I dropped and splattered some alcohol on it. That gives it the freaky pale rings with the dark rings inside.
