Description I got a little tired of drawing so many fair-skinned and haired characters, and so decided to do something a little different. This is a 11x20" ink, watercolor and colored pencil painting of an Indian (not American) princess and her Naga-dragon. I'm trying to find a good title for this.

(I've just uploaded a brighter version of the image. I think the original I had uploaded was too dark.)

Original now resides in a private collection.

I like the use of the cutural traditions.

However, to respond to an earlier comment (I'm sorry, I can't help myself) Naga's are traditionally everything from Snakes with multiple heads who can transform into humans to the human torso+snake body that is very popular today, or even further, humans with multiple snake heads growing off of their shoulders. Of course, it is a little sad that no one draws the human headed snake version.

... I'm such a dork. *sighs*

I like your picture because it fits so well into Indian mythology, where the Naga's were the protectors of rivers (amongst other things.)

Wow, this is beautiful! I've never thought about a cobra ever looking like this, tis very interesting! It looks like it would belong in an Indian myth/legend, t'would be a good book cover. This definately deserves a :!:

Now I'll just have to look at the rest of your work!

I absolutely adore the design of your naga - dragonish and snakish and birdish, with lots of extra paislies. It's definitely a different kind of effect, and a wonderful stylistic contrast for your collection.

Woah, that's gorgeous! Kudos on tackling a mythology so rarely touched upon here. It's nice to see something new, especially when done so well! Is there any chance we can see a closeup?

Yes and no. It was on the original, but looked so bad on the original scan that I didn't include it. The new scanner works so much better.

Actually, the border was on the original, I just cropped it out of the scan because the color was coming out so badly it looked like baby poo. Literally. It was icky. This turned out MUCH better.

i know as a DD you're getting plenty of praise, but i decided to add some more anyway.

first, yay for a non-blonde fantasy heroine! and :gasp: she's even fully dressed

second, the detail throughout this is amazing. you make watercolors behave so beautifully. i think the most impressive part is how subtle it is. the whole sari matching the dragon but the lines never get muddier or melt together. since for me watercolors=mud that just blows me away.

third, i love their expressions. both look a little haughty and possesive. i kind of wonder who owns whom. convenient how she found a paisley patterned dragon to match her attire. that's more my type of accesorizing!

MPFitzpatrick In reply to magpiesmiscellany [2004-10-19 19:05:56 +0000 UTC]

Ah, see, it's the colored pencils that keep it from turning into mud. That and I lay down one color in WC, and let it dry before laying down the next so they don't blend, but sit on top of each other. It makes the color cleaner.

Yay! You picked up on the "who owns who" part of the pic that I was hoping would come through.

Hmm...maybe I'll have to try that. I ended up using watered down acrylics because they dry faster and I have no patience
