Description This is the most iconic vehicle, aside from the supertanks Mike and Victor, that I designed for my comic 6-commando .  I owe a large part of this design in its present iteration to Jim Francis, I have to admit - he did a swell drawing of it on a guest page he drew for me years ago, and the edits he made to the design stuck.

The Howler is a ground-effect vehicle, what might also be called an ekranoplane or a lifting-body airfoil.  In the world of 6-Commando, the United Nations uses Howlers as airmobile light tanks and reconnaissance vehicles.  They can "sort of" fly - really more like a long, powered jump - and hover on direct thrust.  They fill a niche in the UN battle line that doesn't exist in the real world.  Probably the closest parallel would be a riverine craft, or perhaps the heavier helicopter gunships.  But either way, the design is fairly sound, although not hugely useful in the real world.

What about fighter planes?

The UNA uses mainly the F-17E Super Falcon and the Supermarine Starfire.

Any chance of doing art on them? If you don’t mind me asking

My favorite vehicle in your universe!!  I want to so stats for it in Traveller 2300!!

Thanks man! I'm glad you dig it! It does have a semi-Traveller look but of course, it's a vectored-thrust aerodyne, not a grav vehicle.

I'd love to see what stats you assign it. It would be a useful Littoral Combat Vehicle on one of the watery worlds in the French Arm.

Well thanks!!!  I will get right on it for you and post.  Of course I will link your work to it as the inspiration.  All ready have ideas...

"1.7 cal"?

The measuring system is different in the UNA. They don't use Metric, and they measure machine cannon up to 2" bore as "2.0 caliber." Beyond that they rate gun bore variously by diameter (for smoothbores) and weight of round (for rifled bores). They don't seem to mind the complexity. Their tanks get six rods to the hogshead and that's the way they likes it!

I never completly understood how these are supposed to work. Do they hover and fly like the Harrier?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MrAverage In reply to Panzerfan93 [2017-03-30 15:05:42 +0000 UTC]

Both. The ground effect produces lift by forcing air between the ground and the underside of the craft as it moves forward. That's as opposed to a hovercraft, which traps air under a skirt to force the vehicle upwards, or an airplane, which uses fluid air pressure on the wings to generate lift.

The Howler, when hovering, used vectored thrust like a Harrier. It combines the two to make long "bounces" which are kind of like flight, but can't be sustained because the foil shape of the craft isn't sufficient in area or continuous enough in its cross-section to allow true flight.

Oh I see, so it "hops" around the battlefield. From the comic it seemd like it was some sort of VTOL aircraft. Interessting concept! Altough, if I understand correctly, it wouldn't be suited to dense forrests and citys as the maximum service ceiling would be low due to the ground effect, but it would rule the battlefield on flat terrain, like the german Fulda Gap, savannahs, the russian steppe and deserts
I just love your designs and ideas

Yeah they're kind of misusing it in the Congo. But we do that all the time in the real world - design a vehicle to do one thing and then try to force it to do something it wasn't meant for. Not smart, but we do it.

Thanks for the compliment, by the way! I'm glad you dig it!

How long until the tech manual comes out so I can actually READ the specs on this and other units?

Probably never at this rate. It's just for the hell of it at this point.

But if you read it on a desktop machine the resolution should be better - I tried to upload a large enough version to see clearly but mobile devices seem to only get s compressed version.
