[Updated] SNK vs Capcom 2 fan-made character select screenUpdate #1: Rehauled the entire screen
Update #2: added Genjuro, Marco, Mukai, Xia Long, Ai, Guy, Cody, Vergil, Chris Redfield and Hinata
Ok, I've decided to rehaul the screen entirely, because it feels a little too crowd, and it became more complicated to add more characters... so I decided to adopt a style similar to the original SvC Chaos screen.
Sprites are taken from the following sites:
- Deviant Art
- The Fighter's Generation www.fightersgeneration.com/
- Sinhra Productions sinhra.com/
- Mugen Guild mugenguild.com/
Artists are credited by their names, nicknames or company.

I based myself on several factors to make this screen:
1) I went for characters that were in either or both Capcom vs SNK 2 and SvC Chaos: SNK vs Capcom. However, some characters were omitted:
SNK
* Earthquake from Samurai Shodown couldn't be found as a HD sprite.
* Hibiki from Last Blade 2 couldn't be found as a HD sprite, but I found Kaede, Last Blade's main character, instead.
* Mars People couldn't be found as a HD sprite, but I found Marco and Fio from Metal Slug instead.
* Todo couldn't be found as a HD sprite... sorry folks.
* I could have used KOF13's Mr. Karate... but I went with Takuma instead, by personal preference.
* Orochi Iori couldn't be found as a HD sprite. However, I prefer one version per character. That also explains why Shin Akuma, Evil Ryu and Violent Ken are not in the screen.
Capcom
* Eagle, Kyosuke (both from CvS2), Tessa and Firebrand (both from SvC Chaos) couldn't be found as HD sprites... sorry folks. I found Hinata from Rival Schools as a replacement for Kyosuke though.
* I did find a HD sprite of MMZ Zero, but went with MMX Zero instead by personal preference. (I don't need to get reminded of that annoying anti-air move.)
* Shin Akuma, Evil Ryu and Violent Ken couldn't be found as HD sprites. However, I prefer one version per character. That also explains why Orochi Iori is not in the screen.
2) I kept the roster "realistic". I did find a lot more characters from both sides (at least 50 for Capcom and at least 80 for SNK), but I limited myself to 36 characters per side. Oh, screw it!Β The tally is now 43 per side.
3) I followed both games' selection process, which is basically to fill the roster with many characters from King of Fighters and Street Fighter and then fill the blanks with other characters from other series.
4) I went with 2d sprites, since it's called "SNK vs Capcom 2" and SNK Playmore is currently using HD 2D graphics for the KOF series. If it was "Capcom vs SNK 3", I would have used still images of characters 3D models since Capcom is currently using 3D graphics.
5) I tried to use homogenized sprites (emphasis on "tried"), like SNK did for SvC Chaos. Capcom vs SNK 2 did it wrong. Let me explain: Capcom had to make all sprites for the SNK characters... but only remade Ryu, Ken and M.Bison and made Kyosuke, Maki and Eagle. The rest of the sprites is all ripped from Street Fighter Alpha 3, and Darkstalkers for Morrigan XD. Yeah... couldn't they have remade all sprites from Capcom instead of just a few ? I mean, if you have to make from scratch all the sprites from one side, might as well do it for the other side entirely.
6) I tried to go with multiple series for both sides (MAJOR emphasis on "tried"). KOF by itself is a crossover between multiple SNK fighting series, and I've added Samurai Shodown, Last Blade, Metal Slug, and Neo Geo Battle Coliseum... which are the only SNK series that I could find HD sprites of. Same goes for Capcom, as I did add characters from Street Fighter 2, 3, 4 and Alpha. I also added characters from Devil May Cry, Classic Mega Man, Mega Man X, Darkstalkers, Resident Evil and Asura's Wrath, again which are the only Capcom series that I could find HD sprites of.
7) After adding returning characters, I added more characters on both sides, by personal preference. I did find a lot more, but this is also a wishlist of mine. I also added bosses on the screen (Rugal, Geonitz, Geese, Ash and Mukai for SNK; M.Bison, Jedah, Juri, Akuma and Vergil for Capcom).
With all that to be said and explained, enjoy the picture !
Credits go to SNK Playmore, Capcom and all sprite artists stated above.

Even if they took the time, the revenues wouldn't have been satisfying. SNK almost closed due to KOFXII's failure, and they used that game's profits for KOFXIII, which in the end, made the previous game seem like it never existed.
I also heard that Capcom didn't like how SNK handled the last Card Figther title and that game-breaking bug either, so...
To answer your question in another way, SNK has recently released Pachinko machines featuring Samurai Spirits as the primary game... in cel-shaded 3D. Furthermore, they also teased a new KOF game using 3D model, hopefully similar to Capcom's SFIV style. However, why don't they make Samurai Spirits 7 using the Pachinko game's models is beyond me...

Damn, I wish this was real...... just look at those lush, beautiful 2D sprites. If they did make another CVS Game, SNK would have to make it just to stick to the 2D roots.

... although I couldn't have done it without the sprites I've found, so credits also go to the artists as well
SFxT had good intentions... but failed to deliver IMO. Yes, it's gonna be at EVO this year, but there were so many flaws with that game, be the gems, the character selection or the locked content. I'm even surprised that they went with the 6-button scheme without offering the usual 4-button scheme for the Tekken characters.

kaztelli In reply to MrJechgo [2013-05-24 22:00:10 +0000 UTC]
nah... for this or the next vg gen they are going to make better games then Maximum Impact. i dont hate MI, but its not as good as could be. if only was more like the 2D games... but most, if not all changes were for the worst, not the best. like in story mode, where you go single, not team play. i understand why they made this, since groups are not full... but i rather see only former characters, then new ones [mostly not good] that screw up with teams formation. i remember that the only full team was Ikari, with Leona, Ralf and Clark.

Balancing that many characters and that many match-ups is time-consuming and almost impossible. That would end up like MvC2, with only 20% of thr roster being decent.
π: 0 β©: 1
MDTartist83 In reply to MrJechgo [2013-01-09 17:35:03 +0000 UTC]
Hmmm... I'm afraid so. Cuz MvC2 had like what? 56 characters? That was quite a lot for just one roster. I agree that there should be more variety, but there is such a thing as overdoing it. So I guess it would be impossible.
π: 0 β©: 1
MrJechgo In reply to MDTartist83 [2013-01-09 18:42:20 +0000 UTC]
Well, it's not "impossible"... just time-consuming and costly. There are so many variables to use that in the end, it's just not worth going though all that trouble, even if the results would be amazing. The risk is horrendously high for a equally gratifying reward, but the QA department is gonna have to be bigger, much bigger than your production team. The problem is also that there's no tool to hasten that. I mean, they can't just put the code inside a mahcine and have it equalize the stats under 1 hour. That would be awesome though.
As for overloading it, there's a major problem with crossover: you'll never satisfy both sides, mainly because of the roster. You usually expect them to add the fan favorites on both sides, but sometimes, your favorites don't make it, crashing your fun a bit. For instance, care to explain why Kula Diamond, my favorite character, added to KOF in 2000 as a rather important character as well, isn't in both Capcom vs SNK 2 (2001) and SvC Chaos (2004)? Yeah, that kinda pisses me off. However, who knows how the selection process work... ? Do they pick characters based on popularity, obscurity, logic, importance? It's not written anywhere, not to mention that these crossovers tend to favor Street Fighter and King of Fighters above other series.
While balance might be an issue in crossovers, it's just a shame that they don't work on that while adding new characters to keep the game fresh.

MDTartist83 In reply to MrJechgo [2013-01-09 19:10:38 +0000 UTC]
Good point. For me, the game that pissed me off to no end was Marvel vs. Capcom 3. And its not just because of the small roster of characters with only so much to choose from. But because the game itself seemed incomplete on its home ports. The Marvel side of the roster seemed pretty decent. But the Capcom side was disappointing. Once again, they pushed aside Megaman in favor of other characters, and they favor overrated characters like Morrigan and Zero when there's so much to choose from. I was also disappointed that Jon Talbain wasn't there either. I mean I could excuse that for the first two times around with MvC1 and MvC2, but it was inexcusable the third time around. And what's worse is that Capcom makes the lamest excuses for their actions even though fans have begged and pleaded. But I guess... What more can you expect from Capcom these days? It's true that crossover games tend to favor Street Fighter and King of Fighters above other series. And in MvC's case, they tend to favor X-Men over the other Marvel franchises. But in consideration of what you said, is it popularity, obscurity, logic, importance? In my point of view, its probably a little bit of everything. With the possible exception of obscurity since mainstream society doesn't seem to care much about obscure characters. I also agree that its a shame that they don't balance things in crossover games.

UMvC3 actually has an impressive Marvel roster IMO. The Capcom side is a joke though...
- 2 SFII characters (Chun-Li and Akuma)
- 2 Ghosts n Goblins characters (Arthur and Firebrand)
- 3 Devil May Cry characters (Dante, Trish and Vergil)
- 3 Darkstalkers characters (Morrigan, Felicia and Hsien-Ko)
- 4 Resident Evil characters (Chris Redfield, Albert Wesker, Jill Valentine and Nemesis)
TvC had it right for the Capcom side: one character per series/IP. Why UMvC3 didn't follow is beyond me, because they could have taken all Capcom characters from TvC and just start from there. I mean, they added Viewtiful Joe, Zero and Frank West, all from TvC, but not Alex, Batsu, Soki, Saki, Roll, Mega Man Volnutt and the PTX-40A? I could have tolerated a recycle from TvC than getting Akuma, Firebrand, Trish, Vergil, Felicia, Hsien-Ko, Wesker, Jill and Nemesis.
Capcom didn't have a word to say on which characters Marvel would like to add, but at least, it's not that loaded with X-Men characters. I got Thor, Ghost Rider and Doctor Strange, and they've been M.I.A. in the VS series for a while.

For the most part, I agree. The Marvel side was good, but not the Capcom side. The Capcom side left much to be desired. Even in the Ultimate edition, it left much to be desired. One thing that caught me by surprise was the inclusion of Phoenix Wright. I just don't see how that works since he's not of the "fighting game" genre. But the real major slap in the face was the DLCs and the DLC costumes. That is one thing I cannot excuse.
I agree with what you said about TvC. In that game, Capcom got it right. And for the most part, I had no complaints about the Capcom side of the roster since Volnutt was in it to balance things out a bit. In fact, TvC had a lot to choose from. But not MvC3. So that's it, eh? Capcom was not free to choose which characters they wanted to add in, and Marvel made biased one-sided decisions without even asking the fans who they wanted to see. I guess it was kind of like they were thinking "Screw what the fans want. This is our project and we can do whatever we want with it." Well, if that was the case, they're right about that. But sometimes the decisions we make can have a negative impact on the public. I know that much. But oh well, what's done is done. I can only hope for the best.
