Description
I've always loved loved loved Batman Returns, and was the only time in my life I wanted to be Danny Devito. I even entered this contest that Nickelodeon was having for the release of the film in 92. I drew a crappy drawing of the penguin on a postcard, cuz it was that kind of contest. Send in a postcard. I figured I'd spruce mine up with art. but it sucked, and I never won.F you Nickelodeon

I despise this version of the Penguin, or PINO (Penguin In Name Only). It has absolutely nothing to do with the comics and is about as loyal to the source material as the scribbles I call drawings are loyal to actual artwork. BUT I like his costume, more or less, and recently DC has been drawing Penguin with such a costume.

What do you think of Penguin's devito design on Batman TAS?

I love Danny DeVito's Penguin, or TGAP (The Golden Age Penguin in many ways). It has absolutely everything to do with the early '40s comics and is about as loyal to the early source material as it expands on it. BUT many DC comics geeks only know the newer "Post-Crisis" reboots of the comics Penguin into a Marvel Kingpin gangsta rip-off with the Iceberg Lounge by Chuck Dixon and the overprotective mother origin by Alan Grant.
In the book Burton on Burton (1995) by Tim Burton, Tim Burton explained, "If you look at the Batman encyclopedia [The Encyclopedia of Comic Book Heroes: Batman (1976) by Michael Fleisher], the fucking thing changes every fucking week. Because, if you think about the reality of it, comic book writers say, 'God, what are were going to do this week? Let's change the history of how Robin was created.'"
Tim Burton stated that he found the psychological underpinnings for the comics Penguin to be very weak, and that is true. So Tim Burton made the Penguin's origin much more epic and tragic, while at the same time harking back to the early '40s comics. Even Danny DeVito's Penguin frame-up of Batman is like Detective Comics #58 (1941) "One of the Most Perfect Frame-Ups of All Time!" by Bill Finger. In Detective Comics #59 (1942) "The King of the Jungle!" Penguin creates a scheme where he appears to capture wanted criminals [whom are secretly Penguin's henchmen] and turns them in to the police, gain the public's trust, and the mayor plot obviously is true to even the Adam West Batman episodes "Hizzonner the Penguin" and "Dizzoner the Penguin" [season 2, 1966].
In the book Batman Returns: The Official Movie Book (1992) by Michael Singer, Tim Burton explained, "I feel like a real kindred spirit with Danny [DeVito], and I think we're really creating something that people will see and enjoy as a natural expansion of the comic book character."

Danny DeVito was the best penguin, no one can touch him. SPOILER ALERT: my favorite scene was the ending when The Penguin died & the other penguins were taking him to the water where he could rest in peace. That proved that to them, he WAS family.

Nicely done. Was and still is my fave Batman/Burton movie til this day.
Your story reminds me of when I drew my interpretation of Disneyworld for a contest when I was 9. I handed it in to the judges and they called my parents in while pointing a finger in my direction and claiming I must have plagiarized the drawing... they claimed that it was too advanced for a 9 yr. old. My parents stood by me in my defense (they saw how long I had spent on it) but needless to say I didn't win the contest cause the judges just assumed I was a liar.
You are talented and never let anyone tell you different.
More Batman stuff please

Wow, very cool! I am loving the colors in this one! The smoke is very realistic looking, and the glint in his monocle adds to the sinister qualities in this pic.
I'd love to run into him... like this... down some creepy alley..

Yea, this is great stuff. You didn't sound too confident about it, but I think it looks great.

Nick actually cancelled that contest when there was the controversy over the movie. It's not that you didn't win, it's that nobody won.

Methinks his hair should be darker? But this still an adorable depiction. I loved Tim Burton's interpretation of the Penguin: his personality was way too psychotic, but his appearance was just perfect.

that was the tricky part! I looked at so many different pictures of Devito in costume and his hair is a different color of shade. I had wanted to make it slighty warm like it appears at time, but i think i may go back and just tone the hair down with some cooler blueish tones
