Description
Quite a few have asked me how I made my Steampunk goggles, so instead of having to repeat myself I decided to make a tutorialThis way of making a pair of goggles is perfect if you're on a tight budget, as you've probably got all you need in your house already ^_^

I used wire cutters. I'm sure there are better things to use, just have a look in a tool box ^_^ I had nothing better lying around

so cool! i want to make one but i dont have any leather.. and if there is one, leathers are usually expensive in our place.. is there a fabric or any other kind of material that i can use instead. any help will be appreciated. thanks!

I recommend getting leatherette or pleather, which is fairly cheap and can be bought in fabric stores. It's synthetic leather made of plastic ^^ Pleather feels like leather, from what I've been told (I haven't used it myself yet). Leatherette doesn't feel like real leather, but it does the job.! XD It's what I used for my goggles btw ^^
Other cheap alternatives are to have a look in your/your family's wardrobe for old leather jackets/coats/bags/etc that you can steal and cut the pieces you need from ^^ Or have a look for leather items in your local thrift/charity store.
Hope this helps!

I used some wire cutters (as pictured in the tutorial), as the collection of tools I had avaiable was very limited. It worked just fine, but I'm sure there are better tools for the job

The nose piece you mean? I just used a small piece of leatherette, folded it over and stitched it to goggles. Just measure how long you need it to be, so the goggle glasses don't get too close, or too far apart

Interesting. It's going to be really hard for me to find something for the goggle part [your bottle caps]. These are too small, and Mason jars are too large for my taste..
Is it safe to cut the sunglasses with the wirecutters? How much does it shatter?

mtani In reply to Sloas [2009-12-12 02:33:07 +0000 UTC]
Hmmh.. well, I can only suggest you head to your local supermarked and ahve a look in the juice section there. Or look at jam jars ^^ Some of them come in useable sizes ^^
It's safe to cut the sunglasses with wirecutters. But it takes a lot of time, and I suggest wearing something to protect your eyes, as the plastic shards bounces. It shatter quite a bit, so be prepared for tiny shards to pics up after you're done. Or use an entirely different tool (I should probably reccomend that XD). I used wirecutters as those was the only tool I had available.

I found the sun glasses in a £ shop ^^ I've also seen sunglasses with all kinds of colours out on the street markeds/stalls in both the UK and Norway. I guess it's all about luck really. Oh, eBay might be worth a shot aswell
Thanks for the fave!

kool, just thought it might shatter

mtani In reply to PhittPineapple [2009-11-11 22:08:10 +0000 UTC]
Works fine with mine ^^ And even if they do shatter, you can just pop them out of the bottle caps and replace them. Just be sure to not cut the glass pieces too small so they fall out, if they're the right size you shouldn't need glue to keep them in place ^^

Thanks! ^_^
I got leatherette (fake leather) from the local fabric shop. If you don't have one a charity shop might be worth looking into. They often sell leather products (like jackets, bags etc) cheap. Cut them up and use the material
