Description Quite a few have asked me how I made my Steampunk goggles, so instead of having to repeat myself I decided to make a tutorial

This way of making a pair of goggles is perfect if you're on a tight budget, as you've probably got all you need in your house already ^_^

For a better picture of the finished goggles look here [link]

I'm really inspired by this! Too bad I can't find leather or milk caps D: Does this work for other substances as well? (I thought maybe toilet paper rolls might work )

*lol* maybe toilet paper rolls might work, but the paper might be too soft, so they might go flat I think the Gatorate bottle caps are more or less like the UK milk bottle caps ^^ Just have a look in your lokal shops for drinks and juices that has useable caps Leather, fake or real, can be found in most material shops or in charity shops where they sell used clothes. There you can buy it for almost no money at all

pretty cool. but like stated previously. they do stick out a bit too far away.
i dont really wear mine on my eyes either. just on my forehead.

mtani In reply to TimTheScarecrow [2009-07-30 00:08:34 +0000 UTC]

Agreed ^^ if I were to make them again I'd use a smaller piece of leather for the goggle parts. That will make them stand less out.

Hehe, glad to hear I'm not the only one who does that XD

Addicted2Kura In reply to ??? [2009-06-01 14:49:51 +0000 UTC]

A couple of questions:
How were you able to cut the bottle caps?
Do you have the pattern for the leather? And what kind of thread you used to sew them?
And last, how did you cut the lenses?

Thank you for you help!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mtani In reply to Addicted2Kura [2009-06-03 18:51:33 +0000 UTC]

I used a craft knife to cut the bottle caps, was surprisingly easy as the plastic the bottle caps were made of was quite soft ^_^
I don't have a pattern for the leather, as I just cut out a piece, and adjusted the size once I had glued it to the bottle caps. But the shape is a triangle, so that the leather part is thin on the nose side, and wider on the side. Better cut a too big piece than a too small one I just used a normal sewing thread, but thicker than the ones you use in a sewing machine. The two types are usually right next to each other in the store.
I used pliers/wire cutters to cut the lens. But there might be better tools for it, I just had to use what I had at hand ^_^

No problem, just keep asking if you've got more questions or if anything is still unclear ^_^

Addicted2Kura In reply to mtani [2009-06-04 11:51:47 +0000 UTC]

Awesome! One last thing, how did you do the strap for the head and for the nose?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mtani In reply to Addicted2Kura [2009-06-06 21:19:42 +0000 UTC]

I just took a long piece of left-over leather, folded over and stitched so it would stay folded. It will lookl better if you can fold in so the stitches ends up in the middle. That way they'll be against your head, and can't be seen:

_______________________ fold

|x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x-x| stitches
_______________________ fold

Just hold up the goggles and measure how ong you need the nose and head straps to be ^_^

To make it easier to put the goggles on, make the head strap bigger than you need. Then you can attatch it to [link] so the strap can be widened or thightened whenever you need

If this explanation was unclear, let me know and I can post a picture instead XD English isn't my first language, so yeah... ^_^'

ryuu-konpaku [2009-05-29 18:10:54 +0000 UTC]

did you use an exacto knife? i know you said craft knife earlier, and is that the same thing you used for the lenses? i'm steampunking (yay word!) for the first time in june. I'm on a TIGHT budget (as in run around my house like a maniac trying to find stuff) the goggles would be great. just bottle caps pleather sewing and accessories right?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mtani In reply to ryuu-konpaku [2009-05-29 20:43:56 +0000 UTC]

I used an exacto knife/craft knife to cut the holes in the bottle caps. But for cutting the lenses I used pliers meant for cutting wires and such Might be better tools for it, but that was what I had at hand XD if you're using pliers to cut the lenses round you should wear goggles or something to protect your eyes. As pieces of plastic will fly about, nearly hit me in the eyes a few times.. I was lucky though XD
Hehe, I know everything about what it feels like being on a tight budget, so good luck on your outfit! Yup, all you need for these goggles are two bottle caps, some pleather, glue, lenses, thread and whatever you wish to decorate them with ^_^
Hope this was helpful. Just keep asking if there's more that's unclear! ^_^
