Description okay...so there's no title for this yet...it’s an experiment really….but i've been thinking for a while about doing "custom style" pieces.

Those of you who are familiar with designer toys will recognize the technique. I'm making the figure of clay and firing it, but then painting it. A bit different process from that of sculpting figures…or of buying a blank toy and painting it. I’m thinking that I will change DongoToys.com to just a “customs” site (where each sculpture would be one of a kind). These are quite a bit of work, but I really like painting them.

In school my professors always tried to get me to change my major to illustration because I was stronger in 2-D than 3-D so it’s nice to have an outlet for doing some 2-D work again.

Let me know what you think. It’s important to me to hear what the reaction will be to work like this…it’s always risky as an artist to change things up (not that I would stop doing work the way that I have been. But I would do less of it).

Thanks in advance!
-simon

Simon, I honestly think that if you keep doing exactly what you're doing, keep each new piece completely unique, and in some way or another, continue to tie them all into the same wild world they're from, by staying with the palettes you're liking now. They work! They give off a sense of unusual, abnormal, metaphysical and What's most impressive is that the weirdness, (imo) is not over the top weird, but more subtly clever.

This is crazy because my professors are trying to get me to change to 3d from illustration, we're opposites. I love this piece. It's beautifully painted.

Go for it, it sounds like a brilliant idea, and I think you'd find a lot more customers who're a little intimidated at the idea of buying a "sculpture". this, on the other hand, seems more accessible, since its a basic figure (much like a blank toy), and customised, which is all the rage nowadays.

i love checking out ur little figures
and this one is nice, very tibial, yet a tad cartoonly!
i'm a fan of the urban toys and i approve on this...even though its hard fired clay and not plastic

This is fantastic. Very different, indeed.
I do think that your other work is stronger, though... this doesn't seem to have the true symbolic nature that your other pieces have. However, that may be a good thing. This fits an audience.
It is good to hear that you are working out of your norm, and the results are great.

i really enjoy your work

this reminds me of something an artist that works in wood, and the vinyl toy scene where he made a set amount of wooden figures then let a bunch of fellow artist work on his canvas, seems liek something you could do, as i remember your seed figurines from a while back

i could totally see you making a blank shape in your style logn arms, little legs big head etc and casting multiples in resin or such and having a wide group of artists working on your canvas just a thought, heres an article about the wood figure show

and soem of what was made

As an avid vinyl toy fan (and collector) I must give you a big THUMBS UP! While I thoroughly enjoy your normal sculpting style this is a nice little bit of fresh air.

If I had the money I would definitely purchase a one-of-a-kind painted sculpt from you!
