Description Some time ago, i decided i wanted to make a shrine.

I chose to do a shrine to the seven senses: touch, taste, smell, sight, hearing, feeling, thought.

The 7 large figures are the 7 senses. Each has a face that is comprised of a symbol that is based on a medical drawing that has to do with the part of the body that is responsible for that sense. (example: sight symbol is based on an medical illustration of the cone of an eye).

The 49 small figures that they hold are all the possible combinations of 2 of the senses- each pairing has a positive and a negative.

For instance... Touch + Taste = Eating/Gluttony

Each small figure has an illustration of the aspect of human existence it represents on it's chest.

The piece was displayed with a poster that listed all the aspects that the 49 characters represented. Each small character has a small symbol of the forehead- this symbol was located next to the aspect that, that figure stood for.

As if this wasn't enough already (this is a shrine after all, and needed to have the level of complication one would expect from a shrine). Each large figure has a name inscribed on the front of it's chest in an alphabet i made up. The "offspring" of each pair is also named in this alphabet on the back. The "offspring's" name is comprised of the first two syllables of the name of it's two parent senses. The negative's name is the syllables reversed. As you can see, it's all very complicated. It took quite some time to invent and think through it all.

In addition to everything i've written above, the small figures could be changed out of the large figures hands so that they could hold several possible combinations of the smaller figures. This would allow the owner/audience to change the configuration of the piece thereby adding their own senses to the expression of the piece. I allowed the audience to play with the piece while it was on display (much to the dismay of many of my art friends) and i'm happy to say there was only one piece that was damaged.

that's it...enjoy.

Oh I like this a lot! The concept of pairing senses is original and the execution of the figures and layout are just right to me. I like how the viewer is free to interact with the sculptures, though there's always a chance of damage when people are allowed to touch. Very interesting installation piece.
Well done!

Brilliant.
Are there more close up photos of this, and where is the shrine now? And which of the pieces got broken?
I get completely entranced by these things.

this is really the most amazing thing i have saw in quite a while... wow... your a real sculptor man !. this is about, human life, in all the way it goes... i like the idea of the shrine... people in north america is suffuring a lack of religiosity ( in my coutry more that in north america.. ) they dont stop by some shrine or icon and recall that they are complicated person with complicated mine and that all the combination of what you have enumerate in your work make a unique person with force's and flaws. If you open your mind to a work like this, mabye you feel a bit much humble and satisfied of wath you are. This is a art that make pesonalities... like a cult to every type of person, every experience in life. I have to said it twice, GENIAL !!!!! +fav +watch + respect for all your doing continu, you really impress me.

Hello,

The Idea seems interesting, shapes are iconic and slightly ominous. The warm earthen tones and air of ancient mystery. Foriegn almost alien. The hands holding the smaller ones conveys to me community or possesion. And the idea of allowing the audience to hold them as well. Very interesting. The one that became broken adds to the documentaion of the interacte part of this piece. Really quite thought provoking. Thanks for sharing it.

more than the initial concept and execution (which you're madly brilliant at), I'm taken woth the detailing if it.
The planned interactive quality of this piece is what makes it an absolute stunner. I'd stand next to them and hold a lil' guy myself.

Wow. This is a really amazing, well-executed concept. I'd be really interested to know what each of the 49 smaller figures are and what each symbol looks like. (I love symbols.)

Amazing. How long did it take for you to design all this? Did it change through the process or just hit you one day? BAM! Did it sell? If I had amillion dollars I would own this and play with it daily. What a wonder and delight.

I was always taught that there were 5 senses. Which is why ESP is known as the "sixth sense".

depends on who you ask, in wester culture 5.
in some eastern cultures up to 7.

there are 5 elements in many asian cultures also.
Just depends where you come from.
