I look at this sculpture and I percieve it as a representation of an individual whom has a clear picture in his/her mind of an place that is home. The tree above the head can be symbolic of a family tree or a place that represents home where it is where one's roots and heritage are from. As always when a piece intriques me and the title or descripition is a mystery I go looking on google on a journey to discover....sorry to say I did not find much other than Cephala may refer to a region and it's art for that period and Nemorosus has an association with paradise. So if this holds then perhaps this might be a representation of a culteral figure's idea of paradise.

Is there an actual indent in that tree hole?

And do you have the link to the auction?

the surface design on this piece is all relief carving...so yes, there is an indention in the center of the tree.
