Thank you! I've always loved tengu, so I hope it did them justice!

Love your style. I like how you've been inspired by these MIMPs! Tengu was always one of my favourites, but the original wasn't bird-like enough. This version is excellent.

Thank you so much! ^_^ I loved those toys as a kid! And yes, the tengu probably was my favorite, but he looked more like a wolf or something, right? It was weird. It was actually the first time I'd heard of a Tengu, so I was surprised to find out they were bird creatures, since he looked so much like a mammal.

Sometimes in the myths they mixed in wolf or dog features. Some of the more modern ones are more human-like, with long noses instead of beaks. But I prefer the traditional bird warriors myself.

Ah, well that's true--I forgot that canine features were sometimes mixed in. I don't think I've ever seen renditions of them with wolf features, other than the Monster In My Pocket. Yeah! I like those weird, long-nosed ones too, but I too prefer a more bird-like creature. Did you see the other tengu drawing I have in my gallery? You might enjoy it. It's ink and watercolor: [link]

Yeah, I liked that one too. Interesting take on the creature. Sometimes it's good to see traditionally-styled monsters, sometimes it's cool to see artists going a bit wild with their interpretation.
Are you ever going to do any more MIMP characters? Maybe a blue team and an orange team with some Series Two monsters?

MurderousAutomaton In reply to DanTessier84 [2011-03-22 20:23:37 +0000 UTC]
Definitely! Both are always cool, though I do particularly love seeing how artists interpret different characters and monsters from various myths.
I had thought about it, but I actually only collected the first set, so I'm not very familiar with the other series (and it's the nostalgia that made these drawings so fun!). I had thought about doing a nautical-themed team, and maybe move Triton to it, and add the Kraken and Haniver to it. We'll see how it goes!
Someone I know is actually making this drawing series into a board game, so there's a chance I'll do an additional character for each team for that.

Are there only two in your Imperial Japan team? Ghost and Tengu? I'm not sure who could fit from Series One - Dragon from Two and Umi Bozu from the Super Scaries would work but if you want to limit it to the classic 48 (I'm quite into my MIMP, you might be able to tell!)Maybe adapt Ogre, or Vampire - they have equivalents in Japanese myths and would be fairly straightforward to characterise.
Ancient Greece is easy to fill up, there's loads in Series One. You could Invisible Man for the Victorian England team. Anything you like for the Aviation team - I like how you've used that theme so you can get Gremlin in! A werewolf pilot might be cool.
I'll keep checking back to see your work - all of it, not just the MIMPs.

Oh, wait--it's 20 characters altogether. I always forget and think I did 25 for some reason.

DanTessier84 In reply to MurderousAutomaton [2011-03-23 23:19:32 +0000 UTC]
Well, it will be 25 when you add the nautical team. There's a lot of awesome stuff on your site, I'm going to have to take a good browse through. I love the steampunk Monster and Baba Yaga!
Check out [link] if you fancy learning some more about the later MIMP lines. It's just a wiki I've occasionally added to - there's still more gaps than articles right now.

Ah, yeah, I think I keep thinking 25 because I had originally thought of doing that nautical team. I may end up doing it--the main reason I didn't is because I wanted the teams to match the colors of the original series, and blue didn't come into it until series 2.
Oh, cool! Thanks for the link! I might have found this site already, actually, back when I was doing this series. I'll definitely keep it close at hand in case I ever expand the series!

Check out the collection in my faves - I've put together images of all the monsters in the classic series 1. Although Karnak doesn't seem to exist, so I've improvised.

That's awesome! Great collection! I'm honored that a couple of mine made it in there. ^_^ I forgot about Karnak! He would be fun to draw... he and the Behemoth. Maybe one of these days...

Oh, geez, I'm dumb! I completely forgot to tell you that I have all 25 MIMP characters on my website! Check it out: [link] Just click on the second robot head from the right in the front row!
Yeah, I actually started the Imperial Japan theme as undead warriors--adopting them from their individual incarnations from the series to a more ninja/Japanese theme. I like how it turned out that way! The tengu's about the only one that doesn't completely fit the theme, but monsters/demons could theoretically fit in with the undead. I've thought about which character I could add to that set if I needed a 6th, but I'd probably go with the vampiress, though your ogre suggestion is a pretty good idea...
Good idea on the Invisible Man for Victorian England, too--he would even fit in with Hyde as a fellow mad scientist! I actually did an Invisible Man for a Universal Monsters set of drawings similar to these (but much older). They might be on my site, too--maybe in the archives. Yeah, Greek would be easy, and I had actually thought about a werewolf for the Aviators team! The cool thing about the cockatrice was that there was a WWII flying unit that actually used the cockatrice for their symbol. History coms alive! I really tried to tie the characters together in relatively unconventional ways, mainly for the red and green teams.
Anyway, thanks for checking out my stuff! I'm glad you like it! And it's cool to know someone else appreciates MIMP as much as I do! Well, more, actually--you certainly know your stuff! ^_^
