Hehe, to be honest rim lights are over rated, and are used a bit too much for dramatic effect imo, but i made this tutorial just so that some people actually succeed at it.

Sometimes i find the best way to work out lighting is think of my brain as a 3d ray tracer, and i try and work out where the rays would hit and bounce off too. Most times you can roughly work out what surfaces would diffuse the light, and where they reflect. All it takes is some thought and a lot of observation of life.

Same thing here, I sometimes even use a few primitive shapes and a light source to see how it would turn out

i like the tutorial...but one point...you cant say a rimlight is always a bright contour...depending on the plane youre working on and its direction you may blend the rimlight in some areas too(though not too much)...coz in my opinion only a bright contour looks boring too

Your rim lights are fine dude you dont have to worry. I think you have a pretty darn good knowledge of lights properties.
